Yes! I’ve finally done it!

After one and a half years of writing, I’ve finally taken the advice of the professionals and began building my very own email list.

And why has it taken me so long to do one of the most fundamental things that a writer should do?

Laziness, procrastination, naivety — all the usual.

But, I’m here now, I’ve got the ball rolling and that’s all that matters, right?

“Better late than never” — Matthew Henry

It’s so simple to do and it’s FREE.

I really don’t know why I never got started on this sooner.

Besides the laziness and procrastination, one of the main reasons I hadn’t yet tried to set up this essential tool for growing an audience was because it sounded complicated — at least in my head, it did.

But I was very much mistaken.

The whole process took me less than a weekend to complete.

Starting from scratch, and having never set up anything like this before, I imagined it taking days, perhaps even weeks of stress, confusion and endless liaisons with the support team before I was fully up and running.

But this was simply not the case — to my relief.

And to be honest, it probably could’ve all been done and dusted inside of one day, but I took my time — procrastinated a little, it’s my thing — and only worked on it when I had some free time in between having some fun days out and spending time with my family.

After finally deciding to take the plunge and actually set this thing up the next big question was, where do I go to begin?

When you Google search ‘Building an email list’ you are bombarded with a ton of results almost instantly, and it can all get a little overwhelming for someone who has no experience with this sort of thing.

There are so many different platforms and programs on offer that can be used to set up an email list. Some require a small monthly payment for the use of their service and then others are free.

So, there are a few things that should be taken into account before you choose the right platform for you. For example; your skill level when it comes to email marketing, your budget and what you hope to achieve from building an email list are some of the main questions to think about.

As I’m a newbie to the email marketing game, and only starting out, I chose to go down the free route — with the option to upgrade when the time comes.

I chose to use the platform Mailchimp and I’m glad I did because it couldn’t have been easier to get things started.

Basically, all that I needed to do was sign up, create an account and follow the simple on-screen instructions that Mailchimp presented to me.

It really was quite easy and didn’t require an awful lot of thought.

Mailchimp even asks you a series of questions beforehand to discover what your goals are and what you hope to gain from their service so that they can point you in the right direction, towards the tools that will compliment your needs the most.

Which saves you a lot of time instead of trying to figure out how to navigate the platform yourself and find exactly what you’re looking for.

All in all, it was a quick, pain-free experience which involved little to no stress or aggravation what so ever.

So, if you’ve been thinking about setting up your own email list but have been hesitant to get started, I’d highly recommend checking out Mailchimp.

It’s free, easy to use and you’ll be up and running in no time at all.

(P.S. I have nothing to gain from recommending Mailchimp, I was just very impressed with the whole process)

And now, drumroll, please.

The time has come, this is something I should’ve done months ago but my laziness and procrastination got in the way.

So, without further ado and for the very first time ever, I’d like to formally invite you to subscribe to my email list.

And with that, I’m gonna end this piece — and let you go sign up 😉.

But before I go I will say this; if you’ve been on the fence when it comes to starting up your own email list I’d urge you to give it a go. It really is a piece of cake and takes no time at all.

And who knows, it may even help you reach the next stage of your own writing adventure.
