A Writer’s Dream

Read my messy mind.

A bunch of characters were sitting around a table, silently discussing the possible details of how not to get killed off by me, the author of their lives. I recognized Captain America as their leader. Weird, because I am not really into the world of Marvel, but there he sat at the head of the round table, fully suited in all his glorious red, white and blue, wielding his striking shield. It was a vivid image, his bright colors contrasting the rest of the room.

I noticed the cape-wearing Robin Williams look-alike when he started to speak from the top of the wall above everyone. I couldn’t hear, but all heads looked up to him He appeared to be the true leader. There were three or four others at the table, besides Captain America, but they were blurry shades of gray. Listening intently, but not comprised of enough detail to make them clear. I couldn’t see their faces, only forms. No one at the table spoke. He was also lively and dynamic, but not brilliantly colored, as far as I remember.

I’ve always loved Robin Williams as an actor and comedian, and have watched his performances frequently, one of my favorite movies being Dead Poets Society. He’s always been a superhero. I have no idea where Captain America fits in. Any suggestions? “The Devil is in the details.” (That seems an important clue.)

I am convinced most dreams of remembrance have meaning to the dreamer, but the gist of this one alludes me. Maybe this dream has to do with my brain trying to process the intensive reading about writing I’ve been doing the last few days.

The book I’ve been reading is called “How to Write Like a Writer” by Thomas C. Foster. I found the part about including detail to make the story more dynamic, helpful and interesting. I’m guessing that’s where the premise of this dream came from. Am I adding enough detail to this recounting? Too much?

I was only an observer in this dream. I never heard a word spoken, or caught an eye. I may have been invisible, while the characters took center stage, trying quietly to make a point in R.E.M. (Yes, I like REM music, but I’m referring to the dream stage of the sleep cycle - REM did not appear in my dream, although, REO Speedwagon did subsequently, with their song, Keep On Lovin’ You. I wonder if that’s significant? I did just see them in concert last month. Nostalgic.)

I’ve always been front-and-center in my dreams. This is an odd shift. I wonder what it means to feel like an just an observer to this interaction?

Maybe I’m giving it too much thought - I do that, you know, think too much - maybe I should just read some more, or maybe it’s telling me I need more Captain America in my life. I must say, I am entertained and intrigued! I need a nap. And a cookie.

(I have experienced premonitions and explanations through dreams. You? I have a lot of dreams. Most revolve around water, vehicles, death and betrayal. I have found significant meaning in those. Often portrayed as gory and disturbing. This dream is different in it’s “theme” and “feel,” but significant, just the same. I would greatly appreciate any insights related to this matter! Thank you for reading! Feel free to share your crazy dreams below. I’m sure I’m not alone. I'm curious, do you dream in black and white or color? Is there significance to that? My own dreams are in vivid color.)

Interesting read and an interesting perspective. I dream a lot about water too.. I find the conditions or state of the water I dream about to very much match how I feel. Weird manifestation.

I haven't had a dream I can remember in quite a while. I wonder if high stress does that. Anyway, great idea writing about your dream!

  • Wow. This sounds like one of my typical days. I don’t sleep much, so I don’t remember if I dream. Usually my teeth are falling out or crumbling. Don’t know what the heck that means. Definitely would love to delve deeper into this topic. Thank you for sharing this

  • I've never dreamt in black and white before. They're always in colour, just like yours. My dreams often come true, so yeah, something like a premonition. But I have no control over it. The worse ones was my grandma's death because I knew it was gonna happen but could do nothing about it. I don't know how to interpret the meaning of dreams so I often google them. And that made me realise that religion plays a role in it. The same dream would have so many different meanings according to different religions. And so glad that you too are like me, often looking way too deep into dreams.

interesting piece. I really have no idea how to interpret dreams though. Would be nice to hear other people's opinions.

  • Very interesting dream. I read a clinical article many years ago about dreams. Basically the article said that our dreams are the culmination of our activities and experiences throughout the day/past several days. Our daily activities manifest themselves in our dreams and odd sort of ways.

  • I really think this is great to get down, I used to record some of my dreams on my blog, but sure you would not want to know what goes on in my mind. Great story , love it

I'm sorry I know nothing about interpreting dreams, but I did find yours fascinating! I do dream in color, and sometimes the details are very sharp but other times more fuzzy. Very curious to see if anyone else has thoughts on this. Great writing :)
