5 Things You May Not Know About Being a Party Princess

It takes a lot of hustle to make the magic happen.

Being a party princess is not for the faint of heart. It is a profession that takes a lot of drive and a certain kind savoir-faire to pull off.

I think that a lot of people misunderstand the work that goes into being a party princess. While we get to experience lots of amazing moments making the magic happen for little ones, there is a lot behind the scenes that's easy to miss.

1. We spend hours doing our makeup.

We may only be hosting a party for 30 minutes or an hour, but you can bet that we have been preparing for 2 hours beforehand.

Makeup prep, application, hair prep, wig application, and the costume (+ arriving at the location of the event!) all take loads of time.

So while upfront it looks like we work for only 30 minutes to an hour... you can bet it is probably closer to 3-4 when all is said and done.

2. The costumes are not cheap.

Costumes and wigs are expensive. And I don't mean $100 expensive. Some dresses can cost $300+ (I've seen party princesses that wear $600+ gowns) and a good wig is also $100+.

Pile on top of that maintenance costs, cleaning (of course most costumes are dry-clean only), wig restyling... it adds up.

Part of what you pay for when you invite a princess to your little one's party is the presentation. We want to keep the magic alive as much as we can by looking the part!

I know for me, the biggest shock was just how much it costs to have a costume that is worthy to be shown off. But in the end, it is worth it to bring the magic everywhere we go.

3. The magic is real for us, too.

Speaking of magic, there is no feeling quite as magical as seeing a dream come true in a child's eyes.

There have been many times I've walked into the room greeted with hugs and questions and excited squeals from kids. Something about it makes your stomach leap with a kind of joy that I haven't found in another profession.

The time that we share with you and your family is precious to us as much as it is to you. Making dreams come true and creating magic is what it's all about, isn't it?

4. You get really good at thinking on the fly.

I can't tell you how many times I've been asked, "Where's Olaf?"

It seems everyone misses their snowman friend when he isn't around. The answer is always something along the lines of, "Oh, well Olaf had to stay at the castle today. He wanted to have a snowball fight with Sven."

I've been asked lots of questions that were unexpected from tons of kids. Eventually, you have answers for the most common ones, but sometimes there is a question that knocks you off your feet. And you need to come up with an answer--- quick!

It's fun to have this kind of banter with the kids because it makes the experience very real for them. They are having a once in a lifetime experience with their idol. And for us, it's fun to add to the story and make the character that much more alive.

5. It isn't all pixie dust and evening star wishes.

Not every party goes as planned. Sometimes the birthday child is upset or scared. Adults can be rude and inappropriate (and let's be honest... sometimes the kids are too). Eventually, you learn to roll with the punches and not take things personally. But it is probably one of the hardest parts of the job.

At the end of the day, if the birthday child is smiling, that's all that matters. Under the make-up, wigs, and dresses, we are people too. People who want to make your day as special as it can be.
