Crowd work

Some of you know that I had my first headliner gig this past Saturday in Daytona, Florida.

I prepared what I thought was more than enough material but because of nerves and a smaller crowd, I went through a lot of it quickly.

In the past, I thought crowd work was just lazy comedy. Mostly because I’m a writer first. While many of my concepts on paper read hilarious they don’t always perform with the out loud laughs that you are hoping to receive as feedback when you’re on the stage… cursing the fact that you ever decided to do this.

So I was forced to do five minutes of crowd work. I learned a valuable lesson in doing it:

Crowd work is the opposite of lazy. It forces you to think fast and to completely expose yourself and your personality on stage.

I have been told my quick wit is my superpower and that I am funnier when I am not trying. I think that there is truth to that because when I write a joke that I’m especially proud of I tend to try to memorize it, and it screws up my personality in the delivery.
