You Are Not a Time Bomb

In 2021

Dear Natalie,

You are not a time bomb. Before you set your ambitious and comendable goals, I want to remind you of this: you are not going to detonate at the end of this year if you do not accomplish all of the goals, projects and things you think you should accomplish in order to be "successful." Success is not always what it seems.

By all means, set those goals and work hard for them. Give yourself time everyday to write that script that's been rolling around in your brain. Create a schedule that helps you improve your talents. Take lessons and keep creating everyday. Those creations will get you places and introduce you to interesting people. Take an afternoon to set your financial, travel, personal growth, business expansion, relational, spiritual, and adventure goals. Those goals are important, of course. But that is not why I am writing you. I have no doubt that you will be ambitious and go after each one with everything in you. I am here to let you know that those enthusiastic goals might not always be your true north star.

It is said that light is timeless. When something or someone travels at the speed of light, all of time stops or simply, doesn't exist. I find this fascinating because light is the most important element in this world. Without it, life itself would not exist. Without light, you Natalie, would not exist and your goals would have no chance to develop and be accomplished. Learn from light. The most powerful, effective, other-wordly energy operates outside of time. It doesn't worry about the days flying by, the seconds ticking or all the things it didn't accomplish by age 28. It doesn't look to the left or to right and compare it's progress to the advancement of people ahead or behind of it. Light just does it's thing and therefore, affects everyone around it.

A picture I took while flying. I loved the way the light looked against the clouds.

Time is funny. In 24-hours you could do 20 things on your to-do list and feel on top of the world. Or, you could simply have a conversation with one person that changes the course of that person's life for the better. In the latter option, you might not have checked one thing off of your goal progression list, but you did the most important thing you can do with a single day: you affected a life. That is your goal of goals right? To further help people? So, don't get so caught up in the action and motion of accomplishing goals that you forget the true mission of your life: to help people.

Spending time with my nieces. I hope every conversation I have with them impacts them for the better!

It's time to hold the reins of your goals a little looser. This doesn't mean you should forget about goals. Not at all! Goals are what move us in the right direction. Zig Ziglar, author of The 5 Book: Where Will You be Five Years from Today, writes, "If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time." Set your target and aim for it. Be specific!

From one of my favorite goal setting books, The 5 Book: Where Will You be Five Years from Today?

Visualize those goals cleary and vividly. The more you do that, the easier it will be to turn them into reality. But, if after 5 cups of coffee and busy work, you feel like you're not doing enough, something is wrong. Step back, assess and loosen your grip on your goals and timeline. Life is wild, unpredictable but oh so much more beautiful than we can plan out on January 1st.

Life has a way of shredding our goals and recreating them into something greater than we could ever expect. Maybe your "time bomb" will explode into the most beautiful fireworks display and everyone around will get to see it’s splendor and be impacted by it.

In conclusion Natalie, I hope you get to 2022 and realize that your original goals morphed into realities beyond your wildest dreams because you allowed change to come into your schedule and your days to be filled with what really matters; impacting others.

Love,

-2022 Natalie
