In today's era, we feel that people are becoming more and more indifferent, those who see death and do not care about themselves are becoming more and more common, which has caused a lot of people concern. They believe that this era is a time of great moral decline.

Is this the case?

We have seen those who helped the fallen elderly on the ground but was blackmailed, blackmailed people to lose their families to pay; doctors to save lives and help the injured, but was cut off, and killed from heir their career; financial support for poor students to study in college, the students not only did not return but think it is right.

Because of this "role model effect", after hearing these reports, the original many warm-hearted people are afraid to do good deeds again.

Good intentions may not be rewarded, even if they want to help others, they are afraid of the consequences, so they would rather choose to do more than one thing. Modern people are becoming more and more indifferent.

Instinctive protection mechanism

According to Freud, the psychoanalytic school of thought, the personality of each of us is composed of the ego, the self, and the superego.

The so-called "ego" is the most powerful driving force inside us, which contains our most primitive desires, and our most real thoughts, and everything is based on the pursuit of happiness.

To live, we must learn the laws of survival and the social contract, and under the guidance of the ego, we must make rational choices.

The "superego" follows the principle of morality, which controls what we should do under morality and conscience.

The ego is like a wagon that balances the ego and the superego.

The ego has an innate nature, and when we encounter something, our instinctive choice comes first, but then we weigh the pros and cons for practical reasons.

Those who have an overpowering ego in their lives are often not accepted by society because they take more of their perspective.

And those who have a strong superego tend to choose the moral and conscience part when faced with conflict.

Due to the unsatisfactory material and spiritual development, many people in our country are being dominated by the ego. Faced with reality, even though we want to save lives, we are still afraid of being blackmailed, so we choose to protect ourselves with a clear conscience.

Great changes in society

Due to economic progress, the social structure is also changing drastically.

The traditional acquaintance society of the last century is disintegrating, and in this world, the choice of interests often comes first, so interpersonal emotions will become increasingly indifferent.

People used to say that distant relatives are better than close neighbors, but now neighbors are separated from each other by thick doors and guardrails, and even after years of being neighbors, we hardly know each other.

Some sociologists have lamented that society is now filled with strangers, and we all live among strangers who do not know each other.

We lack a sense of social identity, society brings us more pressure, and helplessness and mortgage make too many people suffer. In this situation, the traditional humanistic spirit is lost, and to survive in this society, we have to think rationally and abandon our emotional side.

To seek benefits and realize our values, we ignore the emotions between people, and based on mutual distrust, people become more indifferent to each other, leaving only suspicion and doubt.

Indifference is contagious

Some social psychologists have researched and found that the indifferent behavior of others can affect them.

This is the case with the bystander effect, where the more people there are when faced with a critical event, the more responsibility is dispersed.

For example, if an elderly person falls to the ground, when the person in front of you passes by and just chooses to stand by, then the probability is that the person behind you will imitate the same. But if you are the only one present, you are likely to go to his aid.

Morality is different from law, morality is more by the evaluation of good and evil as the standard, relying on social opinion to restrain the behavior of others, if there is sufficient trust between people, morality will have a greater impact on us.

There was a psychological experiment in which a group of uninformed participants was placed in a room with a pretend epileptic patient. One part of the group was given a one-to-one approach, while the other part was given a four-to-one approach. Those pretending to be epileptics pretended to have seizures.

In the one-to-one group, eighty-five percent went to seek help from others; in those in the four-to-one group, only thirty-one percent sought help from others.

Once again, the bystander effect played a full role.

When a person is faced with a crisis, his sense of responsibility is stronger than a group of people facing it together.

So if there is a group working on a common task, it may be less efficient than an individual completing the task.

For that so-called moral indifference in real life, we should not only look at the appearance, but also the substance behind it.

Each person's experience has made the present, so in life, we appear next to the so-called moral problems of people, we can not just use "no quality, no compassion, not kind" to sum them up, they also have their suffering.

We should reflect on whether we can do better in moral aspects, and whether we can also be role models for others. Society needs to be built by everyone.
