Twitter has a new buzz

Twitter has a new buzz

And this time the buzz is a person – a Nigerian woman who goes by the name of Uloma (Twitter handle: ulxma).

The whole story is very interesting, sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking but ultimately – WILD.

I can’t wait to tell you all about it so without further ado, let’s get into what this whole Uloma story is about and why it is the number 1 trend on Nigerian Twitter.

**Before reading on, please make sure to like and follow my Facebook page so you don't miss out on any new and interesting lists, articles, and stories that I post every single day. Uloma

Everything started when Twitter user Uloma whose Twitter description reads simply “Jezebel” posted a tweet unto Twitter.

The tweet said:

Imagine a world without men. The way I'll be free and safe from all this bullshit. The world will never be a safe space for women until these predators cease to exist.

That specific tweet then went on to be retweeted over a thousand times and had over 700 direct replies under it. But Uloma didn’t stop there, she continued.

When we say men ruin everything, this is exactly what we’re talking about. The number of you who are creeps and predators and enablers both online and in real life scare me. You live to make women’s lives miserable. And then you act shocked that we are terrified of you. Fools.

The day any of you nyaffs make an attempt at mocking Arewa men for the way they view their women I’ll be here to remind you that you all are one & the same, operating from the same playbook of misogyny; opposed to women’s autonomy & aroused by the thought of us feeling miserable.

I lived about 21 years of my life a religious person. I’ve been roughly 4 years irreligious/agnostic & I can say assuredly that the objectification I experience now is nothing compared to the one I experienced when I was a church girl. The problem is not the dressing, you fools.

She kept on tweeting about women’s rights and how stressful women’s lives are specifically because of men’s hyper-sexualization of them.

So why did it start trending?

Well, the first tweet above that had over a thousand retweets was what really sparked the fire, and what caused her name specifically “Uloma” to start trending was what resulted after the tweet.

After the tweet, there were a number of people – men especially – who started to make memes and jokes about Uloma saying that the only reason she’s talking like this and addressing the things she addressed is because she hasn’t been – and I only write this because it was the language used – “dicked down”. Here are just a few.

There were a flurry of responses from men basically bashing Uloma, saying that she is type of feminist they hate, that she is leading girls astray. Basically, they were dragging Uloma for saying what she was saying and some of the tweets went from straight up bashing to threats of rape, assault, very vile and evil things that no one should be saying.

Ultimately, the irony is that all of the men who posted these tweets and are bashing her are proving her point. For a girl speaking out against misogyny and saying that men like making women feel miserable to be met with misogyny and insults of men trying to make her feel miserable – it really begs a huge question: is Uloma right?

And if you’ve lived in this world long enough to at least have a television or mobile device that can give you the news, then you know the answer is YES. Uloma is right. The world is very misogynistic and a lot of women live in constant fear of being harassed or assaulted by men. I think as men the only thing we should be saying in response is “how do we do better?” instead of all of this unnecessary bashing of this girl just speaking about life and how she sees it.

On the bright side though, some people saw the sense in what Uloma was saying and stood with her. A few of those responses here.

And now it seems they're trying to hack into the Uloma's Instagram account.

Whew! This thing is getting out of hand. The Uloma tweets are still going on so if you want to see the latest on the discourse, feel free to go to Twitter and search up Uloma.

At least now you know what it’s all about.

That’s All.
