Butterflies in the stomach are beautiful and sometimes come quite unexpectedly. The phrase is equated with being in love. Because the feeling is the same: You are totally happy and would like to show it to everyone and anyone. The reason for this is a person who gives you a pleasant and familiar feeling that makes you glow from the inside out. But where does the phrase "butterflies in the stomach" actually come from?

"Butterflies in the stomach": What does it mean?

Have you ever had butterflies in your stomach? People in love literally feel butterflies in their stomachs. This phrase describes a feeling that you, as a person in love, experience when you think about your favorite person who makes you especially happy. Often, people in love feel a constant feeling of happiness that can be described like a tickle and tingle in the stomach. You often feel excited and somehow so jittery - just like when butterflies flutter around in your stomach. This happens, for example, when you get a message from your sweetheart or just think about him or her. The tingling in your stomach simply makes you feel excited. This is a clear indication that you are head over heels in love.

Where does the saying come from?

The saying of "butterflies in the stomach" was first recorded by the American writer Florence Converse (1871–1967). She wrote in her book "House of Prayer" about "butterflies in the stomach", which can be translated into German as "Schmetterlinge im Magen". She was the first person to describe the feeling of being in love with this phrase. This expression was quickly adapted and has been widely used in Germany since the 20th century.

What exactly happens to my body?

What happens to our body when we feel butterflies in our stomach? Of course, no real butterflies flutter around in our stomach, but the physical state changes when we are happy. Happy hormones are released. Of course, our hormones are responsible for symptoms like tummy tingling and excitement - what else? Our autonomic nervous system is influenced and changes our body as a result. Nervous pathways and stimuli are activated and make our body feel the way we feel then. The nervous system sends out stimuli to give our body the signal. The signal, however, is just as alarming to the body as negative stress. Having butterflies in the stomach is stress for the body, only it is perceived as positive stress. But what exactly happens in our body?

1. dopamine and adrenaline are the hormones that are released when you are in love. These are the hormones that make your heart pound and your stomach tingle. Usually, these hormones also cause restlessness and panic. Thanks to dopamine and adrenaline, we have a higher level of performance and feel amped up.

2. serotonin is a messenger substance that sits in our central nervous system and transmits information. When you have butterflies in your stomach, serotonin levels drop. You are more vulnerable and have anxiety, longing, and probably fixate too much on your sweetheart. The thought that he or she might be gone someday makes you terribly anxious. Sometimes this can even tip over into a slightly depressed mood.

3. oxytocin is known as the cuddle hormone. The hormone is also a messenger that relays positive feelings to our brain. When you're in love, your oxytocin levels go up. What that means for you: You're affectionate, more in need of cuddling, and wearing rose-colored glasses. You perceive everything around you positively, because your brain triggers lots of happy hormones!

How long does it tingle in the stomach?

The symptoms of being in love and the butterflies in your stomach wear off after a year at the latest. Depending on how big the chaos is in your body at the beginning and how quickly the state of emergency and your hormones in the body regulate themselves again, the feeling of happiness can last for a long time or disappear again quickly. After that, either love comes into play or your feelings subside so much that you suddenly feel like meeting someone new and are ready for the next flirt.

Can I feel butterflies again in a relationship?

Butterflies like it when things are romantic. If you and your partner are in a happy relationship, the butterflies may provide a new tingle in your stomach every now and then. In relationships, the feeling of butterflies eventually ebbs, but that shouldn't be a reason for sadness. After all, after the butterflies come other, more beautiful steps in a happy relationship!

Why do we have butterflies in our stomachs?

This question is certainly asked especially by young girls who feel this feeling of being in love for the first time. What happens to my body, why do I have these butterflies in my stomach? How often do I have butterflies in my stomach and how long do they stay? There are many questions that we want answers to.

But it is really nice to enjoy the feeling of falling in love and the butterflies in your stomach. Our body sends us these butterflies so that we can more quickly determine: This person could be my new sweetheart, and I have to give him or her a chance. The butterflies in the stomach can be interpreted as a kind of preliminary stage of love. The hormones sound the alarm and our body longs for love as soon as the right person stands in front of us.

Whether you can then really open your heart to your counterpart or want to, is of course entirely up to you. But the fact is that the butterflies in the stomach can be quite nice, if it comes from both sides!
