COVID-19. It is in the forefront of everyone's minds and its effects are being felt in the homes of millions and each passing day it seems to come up with new ways to change the lives we thought we had control of. However as the weeks go by and social distancing begins to separate the lives of individuals a collective ring is being felt in the global consciousness of meme-hood. The bois aren’t being tucked into bed.

Modern civilization has spread conceptual ideas and feelings mainly through gossip and mainstream news for the past several hundred years. Organizations have fallen and rose due to this powerful form of information sharing but with the advent of the internet came a new form of ‘gossip and news’. Memes. Bite sized pictures or videos that encapsulates the feelings and thoughts of the generation. It’s the perfect lens to begin to look at what social distancing can teach us.

We can all agree that we suck at prioritizing things. We allow any distraction to shift our focus from what’s important, from studying, from work and most importantly our relationships. However what we have now is the government forcing us to prioritize one thing, the safety of the populace. That means over work, school, and of course social interaction. This has led to monumental changes where schools are pushing everything online and businesses are scrambling to get people to work at home if they can. That leaves many people alone and at home trying to fill the boredom.

So people are creating memes, Instagram, YouTube and Tik Tok are being filled with memes about the corona virus and social distancing. Some are talking to people they haven't talked to in months and repairing relationships they otherwise wouldn't have. For the first time in forever, people would rather talk to someone then watch T.V and that's being felt throughout the generations. However even with this feeling lingering within the hearts and minds of the populace, what are we doing? Anything but. Sure the few are reaching out in desperation but a habit is hard to kick so we distract ourselves.

Surprise, It’s not working.

Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, Gaming and social media. Every distraction that once filled us is failing. Something is missing, something important that most people have forgotten. Even the introverts are crumbling. Cause at the end of the day we are but mammals. We are those sitting-by-the-campfire-telling-stories hairless apes that wandered the world. We have flourished on our relationships and bonds built by the fire and an occasional party. Our relationships built societies, built technology and somewhere we lost that priority.

Social distancing is putting things into perspective really fast. I mean when you can’t see the people you want to. When you are forced into that cold loneliness there’s not much you can do. When your choice is taken away from you fast It aches in your heart and the void that you try to fill feels a lot more empty. So to those who are too scared. To those who are stuck in that habit break free. Face time, Skype, zoom, stay in touch. Cause when this is all over we all got a lot of partying to do. A lot of hugs and secret handshakes to give. A lot of bonds to forge again. We have to make the choice when we actually have it.

Stay safe out there and try to look forward to getting back to what’s important; the friends that are making Tik Toks about how much social distancing sucks.
