Things that frustrates me as new line dancer
we need to talk
Before we get started, I want to say I don't want this to sound like I'm entitled or anything and if it frustrates me how many other people are frustrated by it. According to google line dancing is experiencing a resurgence so if we want this to continue maybe we should try to do better as a community.
The majority of what frustrates me can be summed up by spatial awareness and self-awareness. Let me explain. There're a few things that boil down to spatial awareness or self-awareness.
First thing that bothers me that also falls into the category of self-awareness. At the line dancing night I go to it's part dance class and part social dance. What bugs me is that there are advanced dancers who talk over the teacher. I know that I wasn't the only one that was bothered by this. People around me were looking annoyed and saying "shhhh". Thankfully that group wasn't there the next time they held a line dancing night. I'm trying to learn just like a few others. It's not that I don't want the group to be social just be aware of your volume and others around you. The next time I went people were still talking but I could hear the instructor. I actually wish that dancing was more social (more on that later) just be aware and respectful of those around you.
The other thing is spatial awareness in general. So I understand people get in where they fit in and we're not going to dance in a straight line but just be aware of your space. Especially if there's poles or you movements are bigger. I move slower since I'm still learning so I try to be mindful and be kind of the outside. Just make sure you're not running people into poles or other people.
Another thing is the names. People do not know the names of songs and we've been aware of that for a while. There's also a lot of creative names for the dances. So when looking up the line dances on YouTube or they announce the dance at events you don't know if it's the name of the song or the dance. It is so confusing.
I wish that line/ social dancing was more social especially with the solo community I very rarely get people approaching me while I'm taking a break. I feel a little left out. I don't know if it's my resting bitch face or what. I would like to be approached.
While I'm on the social aspect I also want to address this. I wear stretchy shorts and a regular top, that's what's comfortable for me. Others dress nicer which is fine but I feel a little judged based on how people look at me. Be kind. I'm there to dance and to be social. I should be able to dress how I see fit and what's comfortable to me without judgement or the looks.
Also while we're on the topic. Don't laugh at people or make jokes or bully them when they do something not so smooth. Maybe they run across the floor to get something and it's weird or they say something stupid. Please don't be bullies. It doesn't happen at my place (not that I know of.)
Normalize singing to the songs. I like singing to the songs and I want it kind of normalizing it.
I wish more breweries or bars that could do line dancing. Or if they already did I wish they would do more days of line dancing. If it's a teacher problem we could encourage the advanced dancers to become leaders.
I love line dancing and I one day want to be better at doing the dances.
