The Hendersons: How this couple got started on YouTube

It all started with a few messages of love (sort of).

Bryce and I got married in November 2018 after being engaged for two years. Both North Carolina natives, we met in undergrad in 2010 and started dating in October 2011. When I met him, he identified as Shameka. We moved to New York City after graduation in 2014 and a year later, he began his transition to Bryce.

In 2017, just a year before we said "I Do," Bryce was already YouTubing on a channel called the 7TransGuys. His segment was published every Thursday and their topics ranged from tips on how to change your name as a trans man to starting testosterone. He was definitely out of his comfort zone, but he kept going for about a year or so before calling it quits.

On our wedding day, my maid of honor went around to some of our attendees and asked them to write some words of encouragement or advice for us to read during the first year of our marriage. We wanted to share these monthly readings with the public and thought that YouTube would be the best way. For an entire year, we read a total of 24 letters and shared us reading them on YouTube.

Meanwhile, Bryce had started going live on Facebook to showcase his lack of cooking/baking talents. But to our surprise, people loved it and encouraged him to start doing it weekly. He is hilarious and somehow he roped me in to being his sidekick on the show we call BryceBGourmetN. I'm ValBAssistN by the way.

We did videos here and there, but nothing too serious until this year. In July, a few months after the pandemic hit the US, we shared our first YouTube video. At that point we decided we would get serious and make sure to post a video every Thursday.

So far, we have done just that. If you check out our YouTube page (and we hope you will), you'll see that we have a variety of videos that range from culinary entertainment, to vlogs about Bryce's transition to trying new products from Black-owned businesses.

We started a series called Eating Through the Alphabet on BryceBGourmetN and we also invite special guests (our best friends) to the show.

And like it says in our bio we are servant leaders in our community and have documented some of our local projects in a few of our videos as well.

We look forward to welcoming you as a subscriber to our YouTube page!
