The Day Is New

The smell of fresh coffee newly brewed woke him from his deep slumber. Rubbing the remainder of sleep from his tired eyes, he stretched and climbed out of his warm bed into the cool September air of his apartment. Car horns honked from the street below through the open windows. Voices and noises filled the quiet space as the day began yet again. This is familiar, this is safe, this is his. Stepping onto the tile flooring of his bathroom he relieved himself quickly since his bladder decided this was the first urgent matter to attend to for the day. Afterwards he proceeded to wash his hands while checking over his appearance in the mirror. Checking for anything new, old, or out of place. Finding nothing he went about brushing his teeth and shaving as he does every morning. Making his way to the kitchen he wondered if the elusive coffee maker would still be here or she hurried out into the day before he awoke. Upon entry into the modernly decorated room he found nothing but a newly poured cup of his favorite flavored coffee and a note. The note read "Until we meet again my dear." and it was signed My Love.

Sipping the coffee with ease and a relaxed head he milled around the apartment tidying up while getting ready for his day. After getting dressed and grabbing his belonging he made his way to the front door and out into the fall day full of possibilities. Locking the door behind him, he hailed a taxi. Enjoying the ride into his office, he read page after page of information and went about getting a head start on paperwork, hoping that if he could work faster through the day he may be able to leave early and catch the coffee maker before she was silent again for the night.

Arriving at the office, he knew upon first glance that there would be no such luck in his venture of an early day. Chaos was in town and it was his job to remain calm and handle each storm and potential disaster with ease. Sitting down he started his day again. Working through lunch, staying past quitting time, he worked through dinner. When everyone else was out having fun he was dragging himself back inside his well kept apartment, only to find a meal covered by a warming cover with another note. This time the note read "Every day is a chance to chance to change the world." signed again by My Love. He ate dinner quickly and cleaned his mess. He changed and did his nightly bedtime routine. Climbing into bed slowly and quietly, he kissed the coffee maker's cheek and said in a whisper "I vow to be a better man and husband for you, one day you won't have to work and we may actually get time to see each other. I love you my wife, my rock, my love."

His eyes drifted and slowly closed, slumber taking over him as his hand found her rounded belly where a mixture of him and his love had formed. She awoke a short time later and whispered "You are already a better man and husband, and you will an amazing father. Sleep well my love." Kissing his cheek sleep took over her once again.

When he awoke again, the sun was barely shining, no alarms or cars to be heard, his hand was being kicked, and his love was still asleep in his arms. The day was new and he wasn't going to waste a second of it.
