Befriending a Princess
On Wednesday, January 20, 2016, I had an odd conversation with a dear friend of mine. The actual words we exchanged were normal enough, but there was something hanging in the air between us that I couldn’t name. There seemed to be a question in his eyes.

I’ve become a crier in my adult life. I blame my grandmother who is also responsible for my pre-mature greying. She’s gotten into the habit of crying every time we say goodbye. And every time we laugh too hard, which is often when we’re together. She’s a joyous woman. Anyway, I’ve embraced it, being a crier. Certain commercials will get me, lines in reality tv shows, trailers to movies...things that aren’t supposed to elicit a deep emotional connection, those things can sneak up on me like a crushing tsunami. One minute the waters are calm, typical--it’s a hotel commercial--then, bang, my throat closes, my tears rim, my heart clutches in my chest. These tsunamis of emotion grip me and all I can do is try not to give in. Holding my breath, I force the emotions into a tiny box and place the tiny box on a small shelf deep inside me. I both cherish and reject emotion. I think if I looked in my heart, I’d find row upon row upon row of tiny shelved boxes, where government secrets go to die. Obviously, one of the bulbs on row 138 flickers a bit, but no one’s there to notice. I don’t notice. I’ve become an adept emotional evader, which has served me well in a world of an undisciplined, dare I say, immoral reign of emotion.
Jessica MeekPublished 3 years ago in HumansCould I BE More Obsessed?
I’ll be there for you! When I was around 12 years old, I watched my very first episode of Friends. I don’t remember which episode it was, but I have seen the entire series at least 10 times since. I have rarely watched it in order. Most of the times I watched was super late at night when everyone else was asleep and I couldn’t sleep due to my insomnia. I waited patiently for all of the kid shows to end and even though I was still a child myself I would binge watch Friends, George Lopez, and The Nanny long into the wee hours of the morning. Friends, of course was my absolute favorite of the bunch. Watching them episode after episode hoping that some day I would be able to have a group of friends just like them! You see I was never the type of person to have friends. I dreaded going to school each day, because everyone there hated me and I never figured out why. Friends was an escape from reality for me. Due to past traumas I had developed ptsd by the time I was 11 and it was one of the ways I chose to cope with it. Watching the Friends laugh their way out of every situation really helped shape who I am today. I know that Friends is very controversial for its occasional fat phobia, slight homophobia, misogynistic nature, but as a child I never saw any of that. The only thing I saw was 6 friends who genuinely care about each other and I wanted that more than anything. Now that I am older and I have seen the entire show multiple more times, I finally understand most of the jokes and references they make. I can also tell now that there are a ton of problematic moments that would never fly in today’s society and for good reason! However, for its time I feel it was a very progressive show that tackled many topics that no one else would dare tackle. I am now 24 years old. I am getting married next year and I still don’t have the Friend group I have always wanted, but I know that when I am feeling overwhelmed I can always turn on Friends and for a brief period of time it feels like I am one of them. I still tear up every time Monica and Chandler finally get engaged, I still sing along to Smelly Cat and clap along to the theme every single time it comes on. I still wish I could try that supposedly very delicious Cheesecake and Ross’s “Moist Maker” sandwich. I still wish I could go to Central Perk with my Friends and talk about our problems together and celebrate our accomplishments. I wish I could get life advice from Pheobe. I wish I could get a hug from Joey. I wish I could be told a joke by Chandler. I wish I could go shopping with Rachel and talk about science with Ross. A couple of years ago I started watching the show with my future Sister in Law and now she is hooked as well. It is now something we can relate to and discuss at length. We both don’t really like Ross all that much, but we both absolutely love the story. No matter how old you are or how many times you have seen it, Friends will never get old. Every single time they put their keys on the counter and leave forever, it breaks my heart, but then I remember all I have to do is start over and watch poor Rachel run inside Central Perk in her wedding dress and enjoy the magic all over again.

Love is Blind. Or is it. Who in their right mind would ever commit to marrying someone before you ever really knew who they were or what they looked like?

Picture this: It's 12 am and you're binge watching Bridgerton in your bedroom. You're almost done with the season so you think "Hey, a couple more hours won't hurt you. Let's finish the show. This shit is good as fuck!" So you continue to watch. Your episode finishes and before you can grab your remote to beat the Next Episode button on Netflix you hear rumbling at your front door.
Akilah SimpsonPublished 3 years ago in HumansLulu collapses after mouthing I love you to Dante on ‘ General Hospital’
Spoiler alerts for General Hospital never predicted that Dev and Dustin would die in the ecplosion. This came as a shock for most viewers. Soap Dirt reported last week that Lulu would die and her last words would be for Dante to care for the children. The information is said to have come from a trusted source and it might be reliable based on what took place on Tuesday . Lulu was told by a number of people to get her injuries checked out after the Floating Rib exploded. She refused and instead focused on Dustin.
Cheryl E PrestonPublished 3 years ago in Humans'90 Day Fiance' fans would rather see Colt Johnson than 'The Family Chantel'
"90 Day Fiance" star Colt Johnson is certainly not what one would call a fan-favorite. His treatment of his women - his ex-wife Larissa and ex-girlfriend Jess - has left much to be desired.
Anne SewellPublished 4 years ago in HumansWhat ‘Emily in Paris’ Teaches Us About Modern Romance
Emily in Paris is here and it is quickly making its mark. Darren Star brings his Sex and The City themes and makes them more accessible to the twenty-something year old that is longing to be the Carrie, (or any of the other girls) of her group. While column writing has been replaced by the uprise of the influencer and New York has been replaced by Paris, one element remains just as glamorous as it did then: the Affair.
Sorcha MurphyPublished 4 years ago in HumansThere's something about Elliot.
"The fault is in your appearance." "But not in the way he looked at me?" - A Touch of Spice by Ketan Mehta The protagonist of Mr. Robot, Elliot Alderson is an intelligent, beautiful and kind hacker who takes down the most corrupt and abusive people to protect others, mostly men who prey on women and children. He has a strong dislike for most men and being touched by them, due to the repressed trauma of being sexually abused by his father (which caused his Dissociative Identity Disorder). He is extremely gifted in his powers of hacking and coding which leaves most people in awe of his skills. But unfortunately, it even causes him to attract the dangerous and villainous men who want to use and abuse him for their personal gain.

Margaret MinnicksPublished 4 years ago in HumansBeck and call… the police… on Joe
What is white knight syndrome? It is misogyny hiding in plan sight as chivalry. The idea that a male person is more adept at life and therefore needs to “save” women. In his previous role on Gossip Girl, Penn Badgley played a “sweet” stalker/writer named Dan Humphrey. And a lot of people are comparing his new character Joe, to Dan. Which is understandable. These guys do have some things in common. However, as far as we know, Dan never killed anyone. Or, you know, pleasured himself out on the sidewalk. But everyone is talking about these things, comparing Joe and Dan, and the conflict of Joe being a nice guy who happens to stalk and kill people. But is he really that nice? Even when he’s being nice? When I first finished the series, I was still reeling from the natural high of emotions that I had been dragged through. Now that I have had time to reflect, I’ve realized a few things. Red flags and little moments that tugged this gnawing part of me during viewing. A part of me that knew, even if I hadn’t known what Joe was doing behind Beck’s back, something was off with this guy. And it was partly Penn’s incredible acting, the sense of danger and instability in Joe’s face. But it was also the way he described himself, the way he saw himself and the way he saw women.
