literature
Whether written centuries ago or just last year, literary couples show that love is timeless.
The Very First Step
A treasure hunt! That was the thesis topic that poofed into the mind of seventeen-year-old freshman Anna. It was simple, really: have her friends find a valuable gift she concealed somewhere on the university campus courtyard, and record their behavior. And it was a loving way to give back to the community.
The Storyteller
The Storyteller Though it was not at the point in time, his title, the extent of my knowledge on the man is so minuscule I could not not share with you even his name. Which is why I will refer to him in this story as the man, whom you will see, he came to be.

“Invisible” (written by Naomi Irvin, 2021) If you had one superpower, what would it be? I’ve always wanted to be invisible.

Silver Lining Preface She opened the mailbox and peered inside. There were the usual local ads, a utility bills, and something unfamiliar. When she reached farther to remove the contents of the mailbox, she discovered it was a small, black leather notebook. She had no idea who sent the notebook or why it was in her mailbox, only that it was there and she felt compelled to remove it. She would open it and view its contents later, if there were any. It was feeding time. There were chickens, horses, and a golden retriever mix, all waiting patiently for their evening meals. They were hungry as usual.

5:00pm, June, hot sun and dusty air. It’s quiet, but then it has been for years. Me and fifty other people stand on the platform waiting for no train to come. The mayor has ordered that we ‘uphold values of normality’ to pretend things are like they were. We do this every day, morning and evening. It’s not that we don’t work, we do. I am part of the crop research team. But we don’t leave town because it’s not safe. We might be able to give strawberries a go this summer.

Regan is suddenly awoken by what feels like a million bells going off at the same time. Feeling a pang of anxiety, as if she realized she’d forgotten to do something important; she rolls over and turns off her alarm. Hitting it a couple times before the alarm finally turns off; she lets out a groan; making it clear to her whole neighbourhood that she’s up and not impressed. She slowly gets out of bed and gets herself ready to start the day.

Both the beginning and the end of his life hinged on that first $20,000. Nick had never won anything in his life, so it was with more than a bit of skepticism that he received the news of his “grand prize” win. Certified mail. A real address. A legitimate company. What would otherwise have been tossed aside as an elaborate scam, continued to defy his expectations. He leaned back into his seat at the computer. Could this bit of junk mail be real?

“Into this house we’re born Into this world we’re thrown.” - The Doors My prospects twelve months ago were not what they are today. I don’t just mean money. To be paid to write was an ambition twelve months ago. Today my writing provides for me financially as it always has internally. Into this world we’re thrown.

The alarm wailed above me as I typed in the code for the second time. I tapped the small part of my headset praying to hear my brother’s voice.

Little Black Book I should have never read it—that little black book. A book filled with promise and ambition, yet in the end, offers only sorrow and remorse. Reading it felt like a dream, but now as I find myself alone, in a room devoid of light, tied to a chair, unable to move, I realize that some dreams are living nightmares. So how did I get here?

New York City has always been an exciting place to live. I decided to have a fresh start after a terrible break up and a series of unfortunate events but I decided to do something different and moved to the Big Apple.

“Are you a Twizzlers person, or a Red Vines girl?” Without responding I tossed my phone like a frisbee. I watched, both frustrated and impressed, at my ability to effortlessly generate casual chaos as it somehow launched under my pillow and managed to skid across the floor. I have insurance on that phone case, don’t panic. I knew what happened next. I would fail to conjure the energy to respond until the last minute, to which I’d then cancel said movie plans ( I shudder at the word “date”) with some asinine excuse. Typically I’d go in with something vague, before my anxiety booted up five speed, causing me to get suspiciously specific with my lie, to someone who I’d likely never see again. Sometimes I spend twenty minutes coming up with these lies.
