Love in the Time of COVID-19
From Evan's perspective, the soft glow from the desktop monitor could have been misconstrued as candlelight. To get in the mood, he had poured himself a generous glass of Merlot (the bottle had been on sale at Trader Joe's, a practical steal as he saw it) before settling back into the chair he usually used for online gaming on his days off. But tonight was different, special even, because it was May 2020 and he was having his first date in what felt like ages. The lockdown in the city had made certain that he couldn't venture out to a bar or even catch a coffee date in the morning before work. Hell, he didn't even have to go into work, with his job as a book buyer for the local college moving completely remote till things...got back to normal.

A Crystal Ball of Ruby
“Well then,” said Auntie Helen, “have you done your research?” She could see Shelly had her computer note pad ready, so Helen put on her black reading glasses. She was sixty something, allowed her hair to go grey, accepting, had it tied at the back but the sides a bit wispy. She wore a long top with a hint of Marrakech or Kathmandu, a slightly hippyish look. She was fit and healthy and still made a great impression on a pair of jeans.

All in Good Time
Ashleigh looked at the glass of merlot sitting on the counter. ‘Don’t drink it yet,’ she thought to herself, ‘you need to at least appear sane’. She sat down on the edge of the couch, reaching for the drink anyway. She sighed, ‘Oh well’, she thought to herself, ‘Dutch courage’ and sipped at the smooth red liquid, noting its luscious dark fruit taste.

Merlot
I walked into the small candlelit restaurant and looked around. It was beautiful and romantic almost cottage meets old Paris. Its been years since I have been on a date. Marvin and I were married for 15 years. He passed away two years ago from Cancer and I just knew I was nowhere near ready to get back on that horse. My little sister Ophelia insisted on meeting a fellow photographer she works with. All she gave me was a name and vague description. Alexander, and he's "tall dark and handsome!" She giggled. I was no nervous going over what we would talk about or if I could even still hold a conversation, I didn't even notice that waitress walk up. "Um, Mam?" she smiled sweetly as she looked at me. I looked up and smiled a small smile back. "My name is Adelaide and I will be your server this evening can I get you started with an appetizer or drink?" I explained I was on a blind date and was a little early and was waiting for my date and she offered me a bottle of water for the table. I said thanks and then thought about it. "Actually can you also bring me a wine menu?" I asked. "I sure can ! Give me just a moment." She hurried away. I was looking down at my phone when I heard a mans voice. " Evelyn? Evelyn Peirce?" I looked up and boy was my sisters description spot on. Alexander was at least 6'2", muscular and built, had olive skin, dark hair, and a kind smile. I immediately felt my cheeks get hot. I stood very quickly and shook his hand. "Sorry I'm late!" Alexander apologized. I explained that I was just a little early and we both took our seats. Just in time for the waitress to bring over the wine menu. "Here you go mam!" she handed us the menu introduced herself to Alexander then walked away. I sat perusing the menu and trying to decide what to get. I'm not normally a drinker but I was so nervous I felt like I needed some way to break the ice. "The Jetbird Merlot is a fantastic choice" Alexander suggested in a seductively sexy voice. I smiled and asked the waitress to bring a bottle. We both also placed our food orders and the waitress walked away. "So Evelyn what do you do for a living?" Alexander asked. "Oh, I am the Editor in Chief of a large travel magazine company. We sat discussing work for a little while and then our food came. The food was extraordinary. And the wine was an incredible choice. I thanked Alexander for picking it. We sat for hours chatting about work, my friends, my sister, his family. Then the tough question came. "If you don't mind me asking how are you not dating someone?" Alexander mused. I immediately felt my face get hot and a lump formed in my throat." My fiancé passed away two years ago, he had stage 4 lung cancer. It moved to his heart and they couldn't operate. I took care of him until he passed. I haven't dated or really spoke to another man until tonight. Alexander got up and hugged me and then thanked me for giving him the opportunity for the date. I told him I was had a great time. The waitress came over dropped off our bill and walked away. Alexander paid the bill we stood up he leaned in and whispered in my ear he'd like to kiss me. My nerves got the best of me and my heart started to race. He leaned in kissed me on the cheek and told me to have a good night. I sat back down at the table staring into my glass and chuckled to myself. "To think it started with a glass of Merlot!"

Knowing Nods
Phil and I raise our Manhattans and toast to our first vaccinations. Our chum chatter is all about possibilities: live shows at the nearby playhouse, in-person yoga classes, the summer soiree circuit. Anything for a return to some semblance of normalcy.

Moving Chairs
Martha wakes to a damp night-shirt, and a spidery pricking sensation at the nape of her neck. With a deep sigh, Martha maneuvers herself over to the bed’s edge. Her breath is labored, but soon recovers. She notices the drape of fleshy weight that folds over her side and grazes the dimpled cotton sheets. There are curious moles, blotches, and purply-pink streaks, etched over her abdomen and thighs. Her eyes scrutinize over the well-traveled maps, before traveling to her feet, provoking her to notice the wideness of them, and the overgrown toenail on her left big toe.

Life Outside The House
Now, call me crazy but I think it’s safe to say that none of us are the same people we were pre-quarantine. Some have gone a full year without basic social interaction and, if they’re anything like yours truly, they were not exactly socialites before lockdown.

The Set Up
It had been over a year since Jules had dated anyone new. After a devastating breakup, sticking to her plan to stay single had been fairly easy. She had a small group of close friends, and she genuinely enjoyed her own company. Jules was known to take herself out to dinner and sit at the bar with her book and a glass of Merlot, quietly enjoying a meal alone. One of her favorite things to do was to go to the movies by herself, usually a matinee on Monday, her day off. The theater would be mostly empty, and sometimes, if she was lucky, she would have the whole room to herself. She could sit where she wanted (always in the back row), and didn't have to share her popcorn or worry about someone wanting to talk during the good parts. After the movie she would treat herself to happy hour at a restaurant down the street.
