A re model

She had always played the same numbers and had not come close to winning in all the years, but today was different. She must have looked at the numbers 100 times and yes it was true she had won twenty thousand dollars. The old house she had lived in for 25 years needed a lot of work so this couldn't have come at a better time.At least she could get something done that she had been putting off for years now.

Her husband was gone for over ten years now,he was always working on one thing or another around the house. She was useless when it came to anything like that and with her small income she could hardly afford to pay someone.

She decided the room where she spend most of her time would get a do over. Some fresh paint and new rug would make the room seem happier. The walls were a beige color as was the rug, over the years they took on the color of mud.Pale yellow paint with mossy green rug would bring the room back to life.

First she had the task of clearing all the junk collected over the years out.Over the weekend she would do as much as she could.By Sunday all she had left was a few family pictures and her late husbands dresser. The easiest way to move the dresser was to take out all the drawers,as she was doing this she noticed behind one of the emtpy drawers was a small black book.

The book brought back memories of her husband who would write everything in that little book from birthdays to when to change oil on the car.She hadn't even thought about it until now.

Skimming through the pages she had to smile,to her it was like he was there still. On the last page he had written the numbers 2679 in red ink, their sons birthday. She smiled again for it was the same numbers she had played for years.

Though she didn't believe in messengers from the dead.Finding his book lost in the dresser he had used seemed like some sort of message or something like that.More than likely he wrote their sons birthday in such large numbers was because he was so horrible with dates.More than once he had forgotten her birthday.

She remembered one birthday she decided not to remind him, just to see if he would remember on his own.Well he didn't until the end of the day after dinner, only because she said "Ya its been a very quiet birthday"

Monthes later she is admiring the new carpet and pale yellow walls of her bedroom, thinking about the 20 thousand dollars and the black book her husband kept with with his reminders of birthdays and such.Fall was just around the corner and the leaves on the trees outside her window were just starting to turn from green to yellow. She sighed to herself and thought maybe it was just fate she found that book inside the old dresser.
