Christy looked around the busy bar as her date droned on endlessly. She had been tuned out of the conversation for a while now, not that Emerson seemed to notice. As she watched some of the group’s dancing, she was distracting herself with what she was going to do to get back at her friend for setting up this awful date. Emerson moved into her line of vision looking at her expectantly. Shaking herself free of her spacing out, Christy focused on him. ‘Sorry, what were you asking.’

‘I was saying that it seems to be going well and wondering if you wanted to dance.’

Giving up on the niceties she looked him dead in the eyes. ‘If you think this date is going well then you must be delusional. I’m sorry, but you are not my type and I think it’s best if we part ways. Better to end this now then carry it on.’ With that being said Christy got up from the table and proceeded to the bar to order another glass of wine. She was intending to work her way over to a corner and finish her wine before maybe going out to the dance floor but had barely turned around before bumping into another woman walking to the bar. Christy looked down in horror as the red stain spread across the woman’s loose fitting, white crop tank top.

‘I’m so sorry. I didn’t know you were right behind me. Can I help you get the top cleaned up before it sets?’ Christy was kind of rambling at this point and didn’t realize the woman in front of her was laughing.

“I know you didn’t mean to; it was an accident. I’m Alex by the way. You might want to know my name at least if you’re going to buy me a drink, although this isn’t normally how it’s done. I would still appreciate some help getting it cleaned up though.” Christy blushed as Alex joked about the accident. Suddenly there three guys surrounding them asking what had happened. Alex calmly explained what had happened and that it had been an accident. Taking a bewildered Christy’s hand, Alex led her to the bathroom.

“I’m Christy. Who were all the guys?” Christy asked when they were alone in the bathroom.

“Those are my boyfriends.” Alex said simply as she took her top off, revealing her black bra. Christy caught herself staring and quickly shook it off as she registered what Alex had said.

“Do you mean guy friends?”

“No, I mean I’m dating all three of them and some of them are dating each other. We’re all polyamorous.”

Christy stood there a little awe struck. It wasn’t that she didn’t know the term but had never met anybody so open about being polyamorous. She herself was polyamorous and bisexual so the appeal was not lost on her. Alex just continued trying to get the wine out of her top while she waited for more questions to come up. “I don’t mean to be rude, it’s just I’ve never met anybody who is so brazen and confident about being poly.” Christy finally speaks up.

“Darlin’ we have nothing to be ashamed of and being open in general means that nobody gets in the habit of keeping secrets. Besides it’s a busy bar so who would notice a girl dancing with a group of guys.” Alex responded matter-of-factly as she started trying to ring out her shirt. “Damn this wine isn’t coming out. Could you go and tell Trenton, the one wearing a button-open shirt, and ask him for his button up shirt? Just let them know I can’t get the wine out please.” Christy nodded and went to find the group of guys that she had seen earlier.

She didn’t have to look hard because all three guys were waiting near the hallway to the bathrooms. The guy’s kind of straightened up when they noticed Christy approaching. Before they could ask questions, she relayed the message requesting Trenton’s over shirt. He shrugged it off as if it were completely normal to be asked to give strange women clothes. When he handed over the shirt, she stood there for a moment before turning around to return to the bathroom.

Christy handed Alex the button up top and looked over to see that the crop top was now in the trash. “The wine wouldn’t come out? I’m so sorry for ruining your shirt.” Christy apologized as Alex slipped Trenton’s shirt on over her bra and tied it in a knot framing the black lace. It was attractive without being trashy.

“It’s okay, I bought a cheap spaghetti strap at the thrift store and turned it into a crop top. You looked like you were having a bad time even before spilling your wine, any chance you would want to join me and my guys for the rest of the night?” Alex inquired as she got herself fixed up.

“Well, I was here on a date but you’re right it turned out to be awful. If I wouldn’t be intruding, then sure. I saw you guys earlier, and it looked like you were having fun. Besides, I would love to learn some tips about how you guys are so open and comfortable with each other.” Christy responded kind of shyly. She was stunned to see how the night seemed to be turning itself around.

Alex could see Christy trying to hide her curiosity and leaned over to kiss her on the cheek on her way out and laughed at the complete dear in the headlights look that befell Christy’s face. “Come on, we could use another girl in our group tonight.” Taking Christy’s hand, Alex led the way back to her troop of guys. “Guys, this is Christy and she’s going to be joining us tonight. We should show her a good time because apparently her night has been a bit cruddy. You know Trenton, this is Brandon and Levi.” Alex introduced each of the guys in turn.

Levi smiled mischievously as he moved closer to Christy, “So, you want to join our little polycule?”

“I don’t know about that, but I am curious. Besides I saw you guys earlier and it looked like you were having fun.” Christy responded a little uncertainly.

Brandon simply asked if everybody wanted another drink and before Christy could get awkward or say no, Alex told him that everybody did. Looking at Christy with a smile she said that maybe she would get to actually enjoy the wine this time. Christy just blushed and agreed that another glass of Merlot would be nice. The night ended a lot better than it had started for Christy. She ended up joining their polycule, and it was the first of many dates she had with all of them and some of them individually.
