A twist on a biblical tale for the 21st Century

Recently, I made another donation of hair to the 'Little Princess Trust' The charity were requesting natural hair to make wigs for children who had lost their own hair after received chemotherapy treatment. I really can't imagine what it's like for the children and parents going through this trauma.

I know from personal experience that it's not just Samson who lost all his strength when his hair was cut, for a child it can be devastating. Perhaps not with boys so much who can see it as a 'Brave thing to do' - but for a little girl whose friends have lovely long hair, and all the pictures are of girls will plaits, ribbons, hairbands and floral ties.

It can take up to 8 donations of hair to make just one wig, and the techician will take about 3 days to complete each one.

This time, however, it was very different from 2020 when we were all locked down by the Pandemic. My hair had grown very long again, mainly due to a back injury and being almost housebound. Going to the hairdresser was like an expedition!

The stylist who greeted me this time was very negative about the whole thing - she said, 'your ends are very dry'. Agreed, they were but overall, my hair was in great shape with no split ends.

Then she said, 'The charity are only accepting hair that is over 12 inches in length'. My hair being donated measured 11 inches! I asked her to cut it off anyway because they may need it in future, and as I was due to have an operation soon, couldn't deal with long hair in hospital. She continued with her objections, telling me that the charity were inundated with donations of hair and would probably 'bin' my donation. (Oooh, did we get out of the wrong side of bed this morning?)

As a co-incident, one of my neighbors followed me into the hairdresser and heard the conversation. I wasn't planning on making a big thing out of donating my hair for a good cause this time, but the co-incidence was helpful, nonetheless.

I did think about having a 'Fund Raising Event' at the Pub at the end of the week - but in the end, bottled it.

Feeling as I do about this issue, I imagined sitting in some area of the pub having my locks chopped off, but if someone had made a nasty comment or started to ridicule me ... I would have just burst into floods of tears (not great in a crowded pub on a Friday Night!)

And, after all, Charitable donations are very much a personal choice. We are constantly being bombarded with requests for money for floods and famines, illnesses, animals, natural disasters, etc. - whilst each one is a tragedy, most people have their preferred good causes. I didn't think it was appropriate at this time and will make a private cash donation, rather than rattling a collecting tin under the noses of the pub customers.

My Hair During the Pandemic

During the Pandemic my hair grew very long, and I mean, very, very long. Most days I tied it up with a clip or put it into a ponytail.

It was then that I read about the charity called the 'Little Princess Trust'. The charity were requesting natural hair to make wigs for children, and young people who had lost their own hair after received chemotherapy treatment. I really can't imagine what it's like for the children and parents going through this.

It revived a memory from long ago - I worked alongside a lovely guy whose son had survived a brain tumor, years previously. He told me how they dealt with the trauma and difficulty of it. On their regular drive to the hospital for treatment, his son and him would laugh, and try to have as much fun as possible. They had comic books and comedy tapes in the car - but every night, he told me, this big guy cried himself to sleep.

Changing The Way We Live

In 2020 the whole of the UK country was in 'lockdown'. Many of my friends caught Covid, sadly a few died, and a few were suffering from 'long covid', for months afterwards - even after testing negative.

And, I was the most frightful coward - I used to take a clean handkerchief when I went shopping just to open doors on fridge cabinets, that's how paranoid it became.

I did get Covid, but obviously, survived!

My paranoia was so acute that I wouldn't visit the hairdresser. My hair grew and grew, (I was starting to resemble Rapunzel). Eventually it grew long enough to donate, so it was off to the hairdressers. The date was 14th February 2022 - St Valentine's day. What a perfect day to send some love out to the world.

The kindness of the stylist at the hairdressers made me very emotional. There seemed to be a new mood of caring and compassion throughout the country.

"Now, are you sure you want to do this?" I fancied that I heard a note of panic in the Stylist's voice - it was a drastic change after all.

"Yes lets do it!" I said "there's no turning back now".

The hair was separated into 4 ponytails, and then secured with hair bands - and the stylist made the chop.

I posted pictures on Facebook, heaven only knows why, generally I like to keep my personal life, well ... personal. But this seemed too important, and it wasn't about me.

In Conclusion

The sight of a small coffin and a young life tragically cut short, tugs at our heartstrings, very few can feel unmoved by it.

As an Astrologer, I have read many articles about why our children die young but am still unconvinced about the theories. Yes, it could be Karma from a previous life - but who really knows, that's just a philosophy.

One astrologer made the assumption that these children were eternal soldiers, born before the First World War to give their lives so that future generations would say 'NEVER AGAIN!' Then reincarnated to give their lives in the Second World War and live through the horror of fascism, so that future generations would say 'NEVER AGAIN!' And now ... being brought back into the world to show where humanity was going wrong again by damaging the planet.

Would God really hurt humanity so much to give us a 'Wake-up Call' and get us all to change our ways? Nothing quite gets to people as much as young children getting cancer and other fatal illnesses, losing their lives before their life had barely begun.

The topic is too serious and tragic for me to make any judgements.

Thank you for reading to .... The End
