Niniola during interview

During the interview, Niniola was asked "You don't do a lot of collaborations. Why?" She responded:

NINIOLA: Okay, so one of the reasons is I just don't sit down and think who is hot now, let me feature the person. It depends on the kind of music and the energy. And also when I was coming up, I reached out to a lot of people and they turned me down. And it made me strong and made me feel and realize that you don't need nobody to get your song to a hit song. You can do it yourself. So if I write a piece of music and I feel like I want your voice on it, if I reach out to you and you don't want to do it, that's fine. I'll do my thing myself.

"Okay talking about getting turned down, now the question is why does that happen every time? In your space, it is pretty bad. Because a lot of people come and say I got turned down and I realize that it's like a pandemic in that space."

NINIOLA: Okay let me put it this way. If I reach out to somebody and the person turns me down, I don't care and I don't feel bad. No bad feelings because it means it wasn't meant to happen. But I know that it's a no go area for me, and I'm not going there or looking that side anymore. But I don't blame anybody because first of all you have people's schedules and then, some people don't want to do features at a certain time. Some people are just giving their creativity for just themselves. Maybe they're working on a body of work and they can't do anything else, do you get what I mean? So there are so many reasons and you can't fault that person for not explaining to you because the person doesn't owe you anything really. But if you reach out to someone and someone gives you that feature, you should be thankful.

"Have you turned anybody down before?"

NINIOLA: I've turned down a couple of people, especially because of the music. If the music is not up to par, I'm sorry, I can't do it.

Wow! I guess getting features is a whole beast of its own in the music industry. What do you think about what Niniola said? Let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment either below or on my Jide Okonjo Facebook post.
