"Learn how to harness the chaos of life and redirect that energy to achieve your goals. Let that energy be the momentum that pushes you forward."

That’s the one piece of advice small business consultant Jessica Dennehy always gives to her clients. It’s also the mantra that has sustained her through law school, Wall Street, entrepreneurship, and the hurdles life placed in her path through it all.

Now, through Pivot & Slay, she wants to help others do the same.

Don’t Panic – Pivot

Before she became an entrepreneur, best-selling author, business strategist, and speaker, Dennehy dreamed of law school. That dream almost didn’t come true; Dennehy learned the night before class started that she was moved from the waitlist to the admitted students list of her dream school.

Like almost every law school student, Dennehy found it challenging, but the hands-on practice of litigation increased her skills and boosted her confidence. That was the first time she realized just how much confidence positively affected her success. But it certainly wouldn’t be the last.

Working as a Wall Street regulator was glamorous, but Dennehy became enamoured with the life of an entrepreneur when her side hustle – a luxury barbershop she opened in 2012 – transformed into a booming business. She experienced the freedom that accompanies business ownership and was determined to exit her corporate life and expand her business venture. Her legal and regulatory experience was pivotal as she expanded her barbershop business threefold and opened up a location overseas.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dennehy’s businesses were closed for several months. She took action by capitalizing on her small business contacts to put 100,000 surgical masks in the hands of local healthcare workers, first responders, and the elderly during the early and uncertain days of the pandemic, and also coached local small businesses as they navigated closures, restrictions, small business loans, and reopening protocols.

Follow Your Inner Compass

Dennehy’s positive mindset and expansive legal knowledge, coupled with her finesse at navigating both parenting and career goals, set her up perfectly to run Pivot & Slay. She utilizes her skills to help empower business leaders to pivot their business and mindset so they can achieve their goals and enjoy the freedom that comes with success. After all, she says, who doesn’t want to know that the things they’ve learned throughout their lives can make a difference in the lives of someone else.

The trick, Dennehy added, is to learn to follow your inner compass and your gut instincts. Even if a small business owner is perfectly positioned to dominate their industry, that’s not worth anything if they’re hesitant. By helping small business owners discover their motivation and release their fears and hesitation, Dennehy helps them create a life that works for them, so they can not only achieve true success on their own terms, but can enjoy the freedom they’ve created.

“Mistakes aren’t something to be afraid of if you use them as stepping stones to growth,” she likes to tell her clients. Being afraid to fail isn’t an option. The key to success in Dennehy’s eyes is taking the skills you’ve unknowingly cultivated – collaboration, determination, innovation, and creativity – and utilizing them as part of small business leadership. That, she says, is at the heart of her consulting business, and at the heart of everything she does.

Small Steps Lead to Big Success

Starting a business is the definition of an uphill battle. It takes grit, determination, and a whole lot of humility. Dennehy uses her own experiences – including pulling back the curtain on her own risk-taking, mistakes, and challenges – to model her mantra of “start by starting.” By empowering others to overcome self-doubt and cultivate a mindset of success that draws on authenticity, the work she does with Pivot & Slay helps clients chart a path forward to build a career that incorporates their values and aspirations.

Not everyone is ready to quit their job and transition to life as a CEO, but every small step on the ladder of success leads to the next one. For Dennehy, the most important thing is that she can prompt clients to avoid the kind of indecision that often keeps aspiring entrepreneurs from taking a leap of faith.

"Mindset is an amazing master key that can unlock all of the potential that is already inside you,” she said.

Client-Centered Consulting

Dennehy’s skill in pivoting and adapting her style and resources for each client is just one of the things that set her apart. From actionable task lists for those who need added structure to compassionate support during challenging times, her insight helps clients tap into the self-awareness, strategic thinking, and confidence it takes to achieve their dreams. Pivot & Slay has delivered meaningful change for CEOs, digital media experts, influencers, authors, and more, leading them to more fulfilling professional careers while never losing sight of their personal lives.

Pivot & Slay’s transformative programs empower leaders and entrepreneurs to reach out of their comfort zones to find their authentic selves & start taking the risks necessary for success.
