Can Anything be Verified as "True"?

By Tom BakerPublished 6 months ago • 3 min read

The world is a prison of the mind.

The body an illusory cage.

"Nothing is real. Everything is permitted." Hasan I. Sabbah

People perceive the "Real World," fulminate and fume over perceived injustices to themselves; determine the value of this or that petty bauble based on what they've been told. All lies, all drivel. The bauble will break; at your perceived extinguishment or death, all material possessions will be handed off to others, sold, or cast upon the garbage heap of history. A stroll through a morgue or museum should disabuse you of many common notions or illusions.

Nothing of any impermanence can be said, definitively, to be real. Try to grasp something in a dream; it will slip from your fingers upon awakening. You may "wake up" still trying to hold onto a ten thousand dollar check, but it will disipate like smoke at the dawning of your consciousness, your reperception of this looming day-to-day reality delusion we agree upon as "our world."

That's assuming you, any of you, have any objective reality beyond the illusion of your existence, outside myself. Even if I touch you, this is simply MY solitary perception of you. Even if you strike me, the force, feeling, and pain is still only quantified and cataloged by my own singular consciousness. Verily there is no way sufficient to test the waters of "reality," and determine their depth, or lack thereof. But, even supposing that there IS some way to define the reality of existence versus the illusion of its substantialness--what of it?

Can anything that can instantly vanish be said to have any permanent value as "reality"? The lights can be shut off for your consciousness instantly; and as far as we know it, they will.

Darkness will cover you like a descending blanket of night. This "real world" will vanish. You may face the abyss of No Time and No Thought but then--what? Are you aware that you're in the black? Or is this a sleep-like No Awareness? And what of your petty concern for a life that can be exploded like a bubble? What does your "legacy" matter against The Void? If a radio is playing in an empty room, is it still making music?

One Eternal

Have you ever stopped to consider that everything you see, hear, taste, touch, smell in this "world" is simply coming, solely, through your own sensory inputs? And that those inputs are simply conducting electrical impulses to the brain, to be "decoded" by the neural processing system?

Fundamentally, everything you "experience" as "reality" is uniquely perceived and processed solely by YOU. We aren't "sharing" an experience: We are ALONE in the world, accessing this reality on a completely solitary self-perceptual basis. Your moment-to-moment experiences are all solitary, your "memories" become illusions the moment they are processed and recorded.

The future, which is to be determined, is nothing more than a postulate of consciousness, a dream mock-up that is simply your illusory fantasy of the Is To Be. You never "get to" the "future"; you swim through a future that is simply a dream you determine based on your past experiences, which cannot be verified in any concrete way, but which will always continue to be colored by perception.

How can you verify that everything, as you experience did not independently arise in the moment? We live illsuions of illusions, lose consciousness at sleep, move to what we perceive as the "dream time"; i.e. the liquid soup of consciousness possibility form which what we percieve as "external reality" is born.

There is no Past. There is No Future. There is one Eternal NOW.
