My Review of "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past"

A charming romcom that depends a lot on the charisma of the actors in the movie.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is a romantic comedy that came out back in 2009. Seeing as it's not that long ago, watching this movie will make you realize how fast societal norms have changed in such a short time. There are a ton of antics and phrases that people use in this movie that would not be acceptable today but like many movies of this era you watch them for face value.

This movie starts off with our main character who is this womanizing photographer by the name of Connor. He's a highly touted photographer that takes pictures of scantily clad women. Today we already know that these photographers have either been cancelled or not really heard as much anymore.

On the upside it seems as though the women that Connor seduces are actually head over heels over him. It doesn't take much for Connor to seduce these women as he's a very handsome man that women are throwing themselves at. To him the world is like a buffet but he treats women as if they are throwaway toys. In today's day in age it's kind of more acceptable with apps like Tinder and such. So this isn't too far fetched anymore but back in the day this was kind of frowned upon. Some would argue otherwise as they think that it's okay for men to be sleazy like this. We'll go more into that later.

Connor's younger brother Paul is getting married and he's basically been asked to be the best man to his younger brother's wedding. He accepts the invitation and shows up to the wedding trying to convince Paul that love is a waste of time. Connor believes that everyone should be single and enjoy themselves rather than get shackled to another person and perhaps get hurt by them.

Upon his arrival to the wedding rehearsal he encounters Jenny. A girl from Connor's past and they've obviously got history together. Jenny is organizing Paul's wedding and she knows that Connor is going to be trouble as long as he's at the wedding. She tries to tame all of the crazy situations that Connor gets into while Connor continues to try to hit on her.

Back to talking about acceptability of male promiscuity, Connor is visited by the ghost of his deceased uncle Wayne. Wayne is basically the guy who taught Connor all of the tricks of the trade to pick up women. He was a renown bachelor and stayed single all of his life. Connor idolized Wayne all of his life especially since both his parents had died early in his life and he was raised by Wayne.

Wayne basically tells Connor that he's impressed as to what he's become and in a way proud of what he's accomplished. However there are going to be ghosts that will visit him to teach him about his ways. The message is quite hazy and its not really clear what he's trying to say.

Not too long after that Connor is greeted by one of the his old flames from the past. They go into some sort of Christmas Carol type of story to show him how he became the way he is now. Through his formative years there were a few instances that shaped the way he treated women thereafter. It's unfortunate because he seemed like a really good kid in the beginning.

The movie is actually very similar to the Christmas Carol movie but isn't really a holiday movie. It's really odd to see the movie play out like this but it still works.

I think that the performances of all of the actors was terrific. Each of the actors really brought life to their characters and I think if it wasn't for these actors the movie wouldn't be quite as enjoyable as it was. They brought some gravitas to the personalities and made me care for them. It was sort of like they were fully fleshed characters that you could meet in real life.

There's not much else to the movie though. It is a very paint by numbers romantic comedy that follows all of the typical formulaic tropes that you come to love. It's a very comfortable movie to watch but has a fair share of unacceptable lines and scenarios that you could never add in a movie today.

Overall, I was still able to enjoy this movie with some nostalgia. It really brought me back to the era of which this movie was made. I had some fun with this one and it was a blast from start to finish. The actors really made the movie for me in this case. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. It is something for people to watch if they're looking for a run of the mill romantic comedy.
