My Dream in a Story (Part Two)

So, while sitting at her desk daydreaming about her engagement, one of her coworkers that she is very cool with Sharon comes out of nowhere and scares her. “Skylar!”

Skylar jumps and turns to her, “Hey Sharon! What’s up?” She asked.

“Hey!” Sharon smiled, there were people behind her, “Sky, this is Rochelle Hernandez, she works upstairs on the fifth floor.”

“Hello!” Skylar said, waving and smiling.

“Hello!” Rochelle replied, then turned around and grabbed the boy behind her, “and this is my son Derek.”

Skylar’s eyes widen, she hadn’t seen Derek since last year when it was the last day of their high school careers, she thought that she would never see him again. “Hey!” She smiled slightly at him.

“Hey!” He replied, smiling, slightly blushing.

After Derek looked down to the floor, Sharon spoke again, “Ok Sky, I was wondering if you didn’t mind training him to do the MD orders for the next like few days right?”

Skylar took a deep breath, she hadn’t really ever talked to Derek throughout high school and now she had to train him and stay close to him for the next few days. She wasn’t really happy about it but of course she didn’t want to be rude, “Of course, I don’t mind.” She put on a big fake smile for them, even though she was frowning in the inside.

Sharon and Rochelle smiled, “That’s great,” Rochelle said, “Derek really needs to actually be doing something really productive with himself because hanging out with friends just doesn’t cut it.”

Derek rolled his eyes, “It’s not like we are doing anything wrong ma.”

“Yea right,” Rochelle hissed, looking at him and then at Skylar, “Just make sure that he actually does work and he isn’t playing around.” Then she looked back at Derek, “And you need to do whatever it is that Ms. Skylar here tells you to do, understand?”

“Yes, I understand.” Derek sighed, looking at Skylar.

Rochelle smiled, “Alrighty then, now you two have fun and if you want Skylar you can have him eat lunch with you or if not just send him back up with me so that way he won’t be wondering off alone.”

“Alright!” Skylar replied, smiling, still frowning inside since she still didn’t want to be doing it.

“Ok,” Sharon said, “we will see you later then.” She and Rochelle started walking off to the elevator to go back upstairs.

“Alright, see you later” Skylar said and then looked at her computer, trying to prepare herself for the rest of the day and the next few days to be stuck with him.

Derek walked to Skylar, standing next to her. “You know, you don’t have to do anything. I’ll just sit down and you can get your work done.”

Skylar looked at him, “No, it’s ok.” She smiled, “I can show you and then you can do some of this work so I can actually have this whole case load off my shoulders.”

Derek smiled back, “Alright, where do we start?”

For the rest of the day, Skylar was training Derek in everything that Sharon had showed her when she had first started her internship a couple of weeks ago. Also while training, they shared laughs and even hung out during lunch. Skylar showed Derek to her good friend and crazy coworker Owen who they had shared a few good laughs with. She even told Derek about her engagement and how it was the best night that she ever had. Derek also told her about his girlfriend Jolie that he has been dating her for the past four months. He seemed happy with her. Then ,when it was time to get ready to go home, Derek and Skylar started packing up for the night.

“Hey,” Derek said, “You want me to take you home?” he asked, “My mom has her car so we can take you home if you want.”

Skylar smiled, “It’s ok, I am going to meet Shane and we are going to go out to eat and he’ll take me home.” She logged out of the computer and put her phone charger and flash drive away in her bag, where she was writing her story since she always loved to write.

“Ok!” Derek smiled, “I’ll see you tomorrow then!” He waved and started walking to the elevator.

“Alright, see you tomorrow!” Skylar waved back and zipped her bag up and went straight for the stairs.

The next few weeks Skylar and Derek hit it off quite well. They became really close so fast and started telling each other everything. But although Skylar just saw Derek as a friend, he didn’t see her the same way.

He started liking her as more than just a friend and it was more than just a like. To be honest, Derek had actually been crushing on Skylar for a long time, since high school. Although he had denied liking her back when his best friend Gio had told Skylar about Derek’s crush on her, he lied. Derek had been crushing on her for years but was too afraid to become friends with her, especially since her relationship with Shane.

Throughout the next few weeks, Derek was willing to do anything to be hanging out with Skylar. He would hang out with her at all times while they were at work together and always tried to hang out with her after work and even on the weekend when she was hanging out with Shane. He would ditch hanging out with his girlfriend Jolie so that way he could be with Skylar. He would tell her that Jolie was busy working or running arraigns with her mom so they couldn’t hang out and of course, Skylar never suspected anything so she didn’t mind hanging out with him. Although, he had brought along Jolie with him, just so it wouldn’t look like he wasn’t going out with her anymore and Skylar wouldn’t suspect anything. But even though Skylar was cool with Derek being around all the time, Shane wasn’t. He hated the fact that now he was sharing his fiancé with a guy that he didn’t even like at all in high school. Shane would be afraid that with getting so close to Derek, Skylar might leave him, but Skylar was always telling him that no matter what, she would be with no one else but him.

It was already the middle of August, the internship was already over, and Skylar was on her big break before she had to go back to school for the fall semester. She was puppy-sitting for her aunt who went to Florida for the week for vacation and who couldn’t take the puppy Lola with her. While puppy-sitting, Shane was still working at the summer camp so he wasn’t going to be able to spend time with her until he got out at 5. So Derek had come over to spend time with Skylar so she wouldn’t be alone with Lola, and that way he could spend even more time with Skylar.

They were watching the movie Red with Bruce Willis that Skylar has been wanting to see since she the sequel was in theaters now; and while watching it, Skylar sits in a little corner of the couch with Lola on her lap while Derek sits next to her.

Once the movie ends, Skylar turns off the TV and, putting Lola on the floor, goes to the kitchen to get something to drink. Derek follows her into kitchen, leaning against the washing machine, just staring at Skylar.

Skylar notices Derek staring and laughs, “What are you looking at?”

Derek smiles, “Nothing,” He moves over a little, “I’m looking at nothing.” He started to blush, he always did when talking to Skylar.

Skylar smiled, “Well I liked that movie, it was good.” She poured water into a cup, “Definitely going to see the second one soon.”

“Yea, it was really good.” Derek was looking at her, he wanted to ask her a question all day and couldn’t wait to ask her anymore. “Hey Sky.” He said.

Skylar turned to him, “Yea!”

He sighed, “Can I ask you question?”

“Well you just asked me a question but sure!”

He laughed, “Well let’s say you were in a relationship with someone for a long time, a few years,” he started, letting her nod and then continued, “You guys are happy together, like completely in love.”

“Yea!”

“Well,” he gulped, “What if you had met a new friend and you guys become really close and possibly like each other more than just friends and maybe even fall in love?” He stood straight, “Would you leave the one that you have been with for years for the one that you had just fallen in love with?”

Skylar stood there for a moment, thinking, “Well maybe if I had fallen in love with the other guy, but it would have to depend on who I would be in love with more. The one that I have been with for years or the one that I had just fallen in love with.” She took a sip of her water, “Like if let’s say that I was in love with you but I was still in love with Shane.” Skylar looked straight at Derek, “Then it would depend on who I loved the most, you or him.” Then she looked at Lola who wanted to be carried and picked her up. “But I don’t think that it would happen in my case.” She was playing with Lola.

Derek gave a confused look, “What you mean?” he asked, “Why not?”

“Because,” she looked right into his eyes, “I love Shane and he is the only one that I want to be with.” She sighed, “He makes me the happiest person in the whole world and I don’t want to be able to spend the rest of my life without him.”

Derek breathed heavily, feeling angry but didn’t want to show it, “So you wouldn’t leave him for anyone else?”

Skylar shook her head, “No, I love Shane and I always will.”

Anger was reaching up to Derek, he didn’t like what she had told him. He wanted to be with her but she only saw him as nothing more than just a friend and it was killing him.

Skylar looked at him curiously, “Why did you ask me that?”

Derek was looking at the floor, trying to stay calm, he was so angry that she wouldn’t leave Shane for him. He was falling in love with her and it hurt when she didn’t love him back. He looked at her, fake smiling, “Oh nothing, I was just curious,” he slouched back on the washing machine, “I just saw it in a movie before that’s all.” He lied.

“Oh alright,” Skylar smiled, “Well speaking of a movie, you wanna watch another one?” she asked.

Derek smiled back, “Sure,” he got up and started walking to the living room, “But I am picking the movie this time.”

Skylar laughed, “Of course!”

Derek had chosen to watch Spring Breakers with Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens since he thought that they were hot and under protest, he had to cover his eyes whenever they showed something provocative since Skylar wouldn’t let him see it. Then when that movie was over, Derek got his things to leave.

“That movie was good, the girls were hot.” He joked.

“Yea and it was nasty,” Skylar said, “they showed way too many inappropriate stuff in that movie.”

Derek laughed, “But that’s so hot and you wouldn’t let me see any of them.”

“Well that’s cause you shouldn’t be looking at any girl's intimate parts unless it is Jolie's since she is your girlfriend.”

“Yea,” Derek sighed, “well I don’t know whether I should call her my girlfriend anymore.”

“What?” Skylar was confused, “Why not?”

“Because,” he took a deep breath and then continued, “We barely see each other and I don’t really have any feelings for her anymore.”

“But you guys looked so cute together,” she squealed, “She is so pretty and I like her.”

“I know, but I just don’t think that I want to continue being in a relationship with someone that I can’t always see all the time.”

“Well you have to push yourself to be with her, see her more often and fight for her love cause I know that she still cares for you.” She gently patted her hand on his back.

“Yea, you’re right!” Derek sighed, “I guess that I can try to work it out with Jolie.”

Skylar smiled, “Alright,” she pulled him into a hug, “I’ll see you soon.”

Derek hugged her tightly, “I’ll see you soon.” He let go and started walking off, opening and closing the gate and continued walking, waving as he was losing her in his view.

She looked back at him and closed the door with Lola at her feet. Skylar picked her up and then went back into the apartment and sat down, watching TV until Shane came.

Then as Derek walked to the bus stop, he picked up his phone and called his best friend Manny.

The phone rang twice, “Hey Dere, what’s up?” Manny asked.

“Hey Manny,” Derek said, “I need you to help me with something.”

“Hey, anything.” Manny said.

“I need you to help me get Shane out of the way so that way I can finally be with Sky.”

“Alright, I’ll help you.”

“Good,” Derek said, “I am going to you now and we will think of the plan from there, see you then.” He hung up and waited for the bus to come, determined to find some way that he can have Skylar to be with him.
