Morally Grey

Just a bit of a ramble

In a world where good and bad is not so easily defined, it can get hard when the dice roll and land in the middle. So many things are not black and white anymore that it can be hard to determine what shade you land on. Those shades are determined by the motive of the action.

For example, Murder is black. One person killing another is on the wrong side of the equation. Yet, depending on the motive of the murder, you can even turn that horrible thing into a light gray on the scale. But there is another thing that really controls the scale.

You see, Evil doesn't exist. Yes, there is suffering, loss, people get killed. But nothing is truly evil for the sake of being evil.

Evil is caused by a lack of love, similar to the fact that darkness is caused by a lack of light. Darkness itself does not exist on its own. Just like darkness, we can perceive evil. When we walk into a room with no source of light, we can tell the difference between light and dark.

Darkness and Evil have other comparisons as well, and not just the countless times they have been associated with each other.

For example, when you walk into a dark room, you immediately know that it's dark. There's no question about it.

Likewise, evil can be witnessed. In the world we live in, we witness it everyday. There's no question about it that we live in a world full of strife.

But what happens when you stay in a dark room for a long time? Your eyes get used to the darkness. You start to see the outline of objects that are in the room. The rods in your eyes absorb any possible light or reflections and allow you vision. Limited vision, yes, but vision nonetheless.

Wouldn't you agree that this limited "vision" is exactly what has happened today? The evil that we witness constantly has existed in the world since before anyone alive today can remember. Like a dark room, we have been inside a dark world for far too long. We've become desensitized to the darkness. The metaphorical rods in our metaphorical eyes absorb every smallest amount of light there is. That is why we can enjoy the good things that are in this world. We have a semblance of what is in this world, this room. We view this limited "vision" as normal.

But, isn't "normal" an awful terminology when we are talking about such grim topics such as crime, sickness, suffering, and death? Why should we accept such awful things as normalcy?

The answer? We shouldn't.

In a dark room, it is very simple for us to flick the light switch and watch as the once darkened room now floods with light.

In this dark world however, it is not as simple as flipping a switch. This world has been in the dark for so long, that people don't know what the light is like.

They are afraid of it.

This is because people are afraid of what they do not know.

People have been in the dark for so long, and have gotten so comfortable with the world being the way that it is, that even the light from a flashlight is too much. The leaders of the world and the governments that exist upon it have promised a flashlight, but they have been able to do no more for this dark world than a small keychain light.

So when people have had enough, they've seen enough darkness, enough evil, and they are desperate for some light, they find a wall. That wall is there to support them even in a dark room.

But that is not all.

They start groping the wall, hands wide to cover more area, fingers spread and curled to grasp onto any surface change, nails scraping against the material of the wall.

These people are the ones who can make the change.

And when they find it, when they find that small switch in the darkness. The light will flood the room.

The people that were afraid?

They can finally see, and they realize their actions. At first, they revolt, the truth far too strong, and far too bright.

But then, as the cones in their eyes adjust to the light, they begin to feel happy.

They don't know what this feeling is like.

They just know that it feels good.

Darkness and Evil don't truly exist. They are only caused by a lack of something important.

So, in a world where good and bad is not so easily defined, when the dice roll and land in the middle, when the shades of grey become so indistinguishable, when all you can see are the barest hints of an outline, that is when it is time to find the light switch.
