Imagine you’re chewing sugarcane!

Juicy! Quenching your thirst and instantly energizing you.

Ok! Let’s stay there for a bit. Mind you, only for a bit. FINE! Until you chew.

Are you done? Spit the bagasse out. NOW.

Do it. Otherwise, your taste buds will go papery! Did you? You’re wonderful. I’ll get you another bowl full of sugarcane. Only for you!!!

Let us relate this to life.

You might be talking to a handful of people every day, maybe even more, or just yourself. You’re hearing them out, right? Nice! Spot on.

Now, how clearly are you understanding or interpreting their words?

Are you mincing them with your thoughts or hearing them out?

About the sugarcane analogy, those words are the sugarcane pieces; it’s on you to end it at juice or go papery all over.

There are three instances I came across at different moments with different people –

A friend once asked me, “why are you explaining so much?”

Another friend told me, “you shouldn’t say it that way.”

Another friend sighed a little and asked, “what exactly do you mean?”

NoneThose of them were offensive to any in these independent conversations as they understood what I was conveying, but then for it not to end in a misunderstanding, I had to clear the air. For when I think of this, it was all about –

a. what effective communication can be, and

b. what momentary instances we define as moods can flip the well-made toast to a burnt one

For effective communication, it’s learning to happen, to position my words in sync with the flow of thoughts. But then, once I pondered these situations and asked myself, how exactly was I different in all the 3 cases that I had been questioned about something straight as an arrow. The answer threw me to a whole other end, and it is basics.

“Every person that you interact with has a different understanding. One needs to fine-tune how you fit in with the person and the situation. Not everyone takes things with a clear head; there’s a whole music industry and sometimes, a palace of chaos in mind.”

For one to explain the alphabet “A,” one might say “Apple,” other might say “Amsterdam,” and others might just say a plain “A.” In the end, it all rolls out to the letter “A.” But for the understanding, a different usage is required for other people and places.

Let’s pause in this and come to the momentary instances of moods for which we have a lesser influence. At times, talking or listening to might help one ease out. Otherwise, the situation gets vulnerable. You wouldn’t have much room to cushion yourself. This is more about assessing the situation on the spot. There are many ifs and buts, and this does feel entirely subjective, and here, a short one should do.

Getting back to the other end where we had paused, everything we read was from our end. To complete this loop, you have to think from the other’s point. Only then the earlier will start building the picture. Until you figure out a way to keep thinking positive and churn the not-so-interesting yet alarming ones into positives, you’ll keep having the thoughts that will clash and create different identities within you which I believe will do a lot worse than good, any given day.

Well! There are always exceptions to all this, aren’t they?

There are also people whom you will come across who don’t think much apart from what it is. They’re calm, composed, and don’t lose emotional balance easily.

So how exactly are they different? They are no different than any other human being. It’s all that their thoughts are straight and can be expressed vividly and are related. They talk their mind. Now, doesn’t everyone do this? If that were a yes, we wouldn’t be reading this at all.

Not to ever end without learning from a situation that makes you introspect; the most significant takeaway is keeping yourself simple and viewing individuals as individuals than viewing them all the same. It probably portrays a mirror for you, wouldn’t it?!

Well! That’s not how a mirror should reflect you, right?!

Also, not how a frozen pond should be reflecting! Needs to be clear and precise and own upto things always!

Argh! You’re quick. I see you see quickly, one right away as yourself. Keep the pace up!
