It Was Supposed to Be One Date

How I got caught up in true love: Part One

By NiquePublished 6 years ago • 3 min read

During the pandemic, I decided to get back on the dating scene. I was bored and wanted someone to entertain me. With all honestly, I didn't think I would ever meet up with anyone at all. So first, on my list of dating apps, I decided to re-download Tinder, but to my surprise, Tinder banned me! I was like, let me not sweat it. There are other dating apps.

Next on my dating app list was Hinge. I made sure I put my personality into and hoped that I would get hits. I stayed on the app for about two weeks, and the only people were connecting with me we're exes. I was mortified because one of them changed his looks entirely, and I started to do the whole talking stage with him again until he said, "you don't remember me?" I'm like, "no, what are you talking about? We've never met before." So I took a minute to think back, and he was so right. From there, all of the bad memories came rushing in, and I was pissed off. Instead of arguing with him or anything, I just silently blocked his number like nothing ever happened.

Lastly, on my list was Bumble. At this point, I was annoyed with the whole dating thing until I matched with this one guy. For some reason, I was hoping that he would want to talk to me, and from there, we instantly clicked. He and I were on the phone every day, every minute, to every millisecond. I didn't get my hopes up right away because I knew this dating app stuff wasn't serious, but I was wrong. Our two week cut off turned into a month of talking nonstop and wanting to be in the presence of each other. I thought to myself, did I finally find someone genuinely interested in me? Everything felt so good and so surreal. But one day, he messaged me and said he needed to talk to me. My stomach hit the ground, and my soul left my body when I read that message. I prepared myself for the worse and waited until he told me what he needed to talk about. I watched in anticipation of the three dots.

As the three dots went away I became more anxious. I didn’t want to double text or be pushy so I waited until he was ready. I waited five minutes. Ten minutes. Fifteen minutes and finally I couldn’t take it no more. I decided to call him. He answered the phone like nothing ever happened. Like my heart didn’t drop to my feet and I was panting. I said “Well?” And he answered “What’s up babe?” I’m looking at the phone with disbelief. I’m like “hello?!?! What were you going to tell me?” He laughed a bit and said “sorry I fell asleep in the middle of the text, but it’s nothing I’ll tell you a different time.” I’m like “why would you bring it up then? I want to know. Can you please just tell me what’s going on?” He said “If I tell you you’re going to hate me and I don’t want to lose you right now. Or ever.” I stayed silent for a brief second and I said “lose me? What do you mean? Where are you going? I’m not going anywhere. I would never leave you and you know that.” He sighed and told me to forget about it and that he’ll explain in the future. I blew him a kiss over the phone and told him to get some rest because he had to work the night shift.

After we hung up the thought lingered in my mind. What does he have to tell me?
