Is Kindness too hard?
A love letter to those who are kind.
I want to start this post off with something a little different, A little more formal and polite. Something that says βOh my, Wow Kellie is a nice girl.β Considering this blog post is going to be about kindness and the adventures that being nice just so happens to bring.
Along with the adventures that you may go through when you arenβt a kind and considerate person. So.. Here we go;
Hello, Good Morning, Good Evening- Hi, How are ya?
I've worked in customer service multiple times, Iβve dealt with all kinds of βKarensβ and βChadsβ and something about the way that people treat customer service workers, It really makes me sick.
When I was a facepainter- Which I admit had been my favorite job, My boss had us volunteer at an elementary school. There were three face painters and way too many kids, Of course there were other little kiosks and food to keep the kids busy, But the minute kids started seeing the designs and characters on the kids we painted, All the other children and parents wanted some.
However, Parents aren't exactly the people who praise you for your good work- Even if its completely amazing and their kids have kicked you in the shin and called you an idiot.
I worked myself to the bone that day, At one point I did an entire triage of siblings- Both hands, Both Cheeks and I wasnβt exactly pleased to get no tip. Let me mention that I messed up on one small hand because their kid wouldnβt stop moving, Right after their other child kicked me and called me an idiot- Yet they looked at me like I ruined their day.
My point is, Iβve been through the ringer- I worked at a very popular βMermaid brandedβ Coffee company and iβve seen everything in the book. Now its time for the real story- The reason I opened google docs to spill all about why I see a huge lack of kindness towards customer service workers.
My big sister took me and my mother out to dinner at our favorite βLocalβ restaurant, Olive Garden. As we sit at our table, All three of us excited to feast upon our soup- My sister spots bugs.
We had this adorable little old lady for a waitress, Sheβs sweet and kind- Moves us to a completely different part of the restaurant and still serves us with a smile. Now to be clear, My whole family has had jobs working in customer service, Chain restaurants, and Even Janitorial Jobs. To put it simply, We have and treat people with respect.
My kind waitress comes to take our order and my ears with the abilities of an eagle pick up on subtle complaints from the table behind me. My mother taught me never to start a problem in front of people or just in general, So I was sure to leave it.
Except this pair of overly obnoxious women start talking loudly on purpose, I start hearing them accusing the staff of spitting in their food when they βEventuallyβ get it. They complain so loud and so rudely that I actually apologize to the waitress.
By the time the food is here, The way these two women were behaving was actually making me sick to my stomach. Iβve never heard people be so blatantly rude to the people who were feeding them. My own mother even said- And I quote;
βI do not want to go to jail today.β
My mother is the type of woman who has always stood up for what she believes is right, Sheβs always had a moral compass that I could look up to. The one thing she never does, Is start a scene.
Dear reader, I would like you to tell me in what world is it okay for you to berate the people who help you?
Is kindness really too hard to muster?
