The chilly winter air whipped violently around her, causing her light blonde hair to venture in all different directions. The snow came down slowly, coating the mostly empty parking lot with a thin white layer. She slowed her walk ever so slightly, heart pounding in anticipation at the thought of the conversation she was about to have. Nothing about this was normal; this was completely uncharted territory for the young girl.

He gripped onto his cigarette, closing his eyes at the sensation it cause him, blowing out the smoke in a slow, drawn out manor. He wasn’t much of a smoker; just when he was stressed; for times like these. His heart pounded as he replayed the last conversation he had with her over and over in his head, driving him insane.

“I think I’m falling in love with you” the words had escaped his lips before he even had the chance to take them back. Her eyes grew wide with surprise; he was falling in love with her? So many questions raced rapidly through her mind; the ability to speak seemed to escape her; she couldn’t formulate a response.

His eyes were glazed over, tears threatening to spill over as he tossed the butt of his cigarette to the ground. The cold winter temperature was starting to get to him; he shivered slightly, internally debating his next move. Whatever thing he had with her was over now; as complicated as it was to explain. Friends? Not quite. Friends with benefits? Also, not quite. Complicated was the only word he could think of to describe it; before he screwed it up.

He had told her no feelings would be involved; just fun. Seemed simple enough; at least, at first. But as he danced with her earlier that night, he saw her in a light he had always seen her in, but never admitted to himself. She was beautiful; long, straight blonde hair tucked into a neat pony tail; chocolate brown eyes and the most dazzling smile. She cared for him, like nobody else in his life cared. She was funny, in her own special way, but it never hesitated to make him smile.

He decided on grabbing another cigarette, thinking back with a smile at how beautiful she truly looked; he couldn’t help but stare as they danced to a slow song he didn’t recognize. But it didn’t matter; he was with her; so he was happy. He knew in that moment he had to tell her; he just didn’t think he’d let it slip so soon.

“Mind if I cut in?” The words echoed in her brain, taunting her slightly. Just as she was about to answer to his confession, just as she was about to tell him how she felt, they were interrupted. The obvious answer was yes; of course they both minded if he cut in. But before she could formulate an answer, trying to hide the anger in her voice, her dance partner was gone; leaving the building in exchange for the cold, unforgiving December air.

He tossed his second cigarette butt to the ground, cursing the interruption, and cursing himself for leaving so suddenly. He could remember the last time he told somebody he was in love with them; and he honestly never thought he’d be able to say it to another girl again. Doesn’t matter now though, he thought with a grimace; she doesn’t feel the same. He was so deep in his own mind he didn’t even hear her approach; he didn’t hear the clicking of her heels on the salted pavement.

After an internal struggle, she finally worked up the courage to approach him. He stood against the wall, hands in his pockets, head slouched down, looking defeated. It broke her heart slightly, seeing him look so hurt. He truly was handsome; his short brown hair was slicked back, his attempt to dress up his black jeans and button up blue plaid shirt amused her; but he still looked stunning.

Her lips parted, ready to catch his attention when he looked up. His eyes were glossy, widening with surprise when he caught her eye, his frown turning into a small smile at her mere presence.

Before he even had the chance to speak, she pulled him closer to her, feeling his hot breath as she closed the gap between their lips.

He surrendered to her touch, allowing his surprise only to last for a moment before he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her against his chest.

She finally pulled away, breathing heavier than normal. His hands rested on her waist, his facial expression reading that of confusion. She tried to bite back the large smile that consumed her face as she spoke the words he so longed to hear.

“I think I’m falling in love with you, too”
