I Smile in Public… But Cry in the Shower
Being the ‘Strong One’ Is Slowly Breaking Me

💔 I Smile in Public… But Cry in the Shower
(Being the “Strong One” Is Slowly Breaking Me)
People know me as the “strong one.”
The one who smiles the most.
The one who says, “It’s okay, don’t worry.”
The one who listens more than they speak.
If you saw me outside—at work, with friends, even at family gatherings—you’d think I had everything under control.
I laugh at the right moments.
I give advice like I have life figured out.
I carry myself like nothing ever shakes me.
And maybe that’s the problem.
Because no one ever asks if I’m okay.
⸻
It started a long time ago.
I don’t even remember when I became this person.
Maybe it was the day I realized crying didn’t fix anything.
Or the moment I saw someone I loved fall apart—and knew I had to hold it together for both of us.
So I did.
I became calm.
Reliable.
Unbreakable.
At least… that’s what everyone believes.
⸻
“Talk to me, you always understand.”
“I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“You’re so strong.”
They say these things like compliments.
And I smile.
I always smile.
Because how do you tell people that being “strong” isn’t something you chose?
It’s something that was forced on you… slowly… quietly… until it became your identity.
⸻
The truth is—
I don’t always understand.
I don’t always have answers.
And sometimes… I feel like I’m drowning while teaching others how to swim.
⸻
There are days when everything feels heavy.
Not in a dramatic, obvious way.
Just… quietly exhausting.
Like waking up already tired.
Like carrying thoughts you can’t explain.
Like wanting to disappear for a while, but knowing you can’t.
Because people need you.
They always need you.
⸻
So I show up.
I reply to messages.
I comfort friends.
I make jokes.
I pretend.
And no one notices the pauses between my smiles.
⸻
The only place I don’t pretend…
Is the shower.
⸻
It’s strange, isn’t it?
How water can hide everything.
The sound drowns out the silence.
The drops blur the tears.
And for a few minutes, I don’t have to be strong.
I don’t have to hold it together.
I just… let go.
⸻
That’s where it all comes out.
The stress I never talk about.
The things I wish I could say.
The pain I don’t know how to explain.
Sometimes I don’t even know why I’m crying.
And that scares me the most.
⸻
Because when you’re the “strong one,” you’re not supposed to break.
You’re not supposed to feel lost.
You’re not supposed to need saving.
⸻
But I do.
I just don’t know how to ask.
⸻
There’s this fear that lives inside me—
That if I stop being strong, everything will fall apart.
That if I open up, I’ll become a burden.
That if I show my cracks, people will leave.
So I stay silent.
I keep smiling.
I keep being the person everyone expects me to be.
⸻
But lately… it’s getting harder.
The smiles feel heavier.
The silence feels louder.
And the weight I carry doesn’t feel like strength anymore.
It feels like pressure.
⸻
I watch other people express their emotions so freely.
They cry, they vent, they lean on others.
And I wonder…
What does that feel like?
To not have to hold everything inside.
To not feel responsible for everyone else’s happiness.
To not be the “strong one” all the time.
⸻
I don’t want to be strong anymore.
Not like this.
Not in a way that slowly breaks me.
⸻
I want to be real.
I want to say, “I’m not okay today.”
I want to admit that I’m tired.
I want someone to sit beside me and say, “You don’t have to pretend.”
Just once.
⸻
But until then…
I’ll keep doing what I’ve always done.
I’ll smile in public.
I’ll laugh a little louder than I feel.
I’ll tell everyone else that everything will be okay.
⸻
And then—
I’ll go home.
Turn on the shower.
And let the truth fall quietly with the water.
⸻
Because being the strong one…
Doesn’t mean you’re not breaking.
It just means…
No one sees it….
