There was this young lad and his name was Thomas Gates Jr., short for Tom, His father was Thomas Gates Sr. and his mother was named Laura, he was turning 18 today, It was September 10, 1925, he grew up in a little town called Gatsby, Long Island, New York. am His father the richest man in town and he wanted his one and only son to have the best birthday party. It was 7:00 am and all the staff and caterers were there setting up for his son's birthday party. The whole town would be there, as he sent out a invitation to everyone. There was about 1,200 people in our town, so it was going to be a huge party. His son knew there was going to be a party but he didn't know that it was going to be the whole town. Thomas had a crush on this girl named Caroline, She had the most fairest skin, and the most beautiful sandy blonde hair. She was a dream come true. She also had a crush on him but she kept it quiet, only her best friend Jenny Jane knew all her deepest secrets and she knew hers, they grew up together on the same farm. There houses were about 500 feet from each other. They did everything together as they grew up together. There was also this girl named kelly lane who really liked Thomas also. She was pretty but not like Caroline. Thomas would be off to boot camp to join the Marines in 3 weeks, he always wanted to join the Marines as a young boy.

Dad what time is the party? Its starts at 3:30 and ends after midnight, I want this day to be the best birthday ever, he replied. Your mother is out shopping for her attire for the party. Ok dad, i'm going to take a shower and head out to town to pick up George and Ill be back in about an hour. Ok son just make sure your back by 2 to get dressed for your party. Yes, dad will do, I'll see you later. Thomas hopped in the shower for about 20 minutes and then jumped out, put his clothes on and was out the door in a matter of minutes. He drives a Ford. So he went and picked up George and he was happy to leave his house because his parent were always fighting. Hey George what time is it? Its 1:30, he replied. Ok its time to head back to my house, I have to get ready for my 18th birthday party. Hey Thomas, look whos walking out of the clothing store, Thomas said who? Oh wow its Caroline. Thomas pulled over to talk for a minute. Hey Caroline, will you be attending my party? Yes, Thomas off course I wouldn't miss it for the world. Her heart was racing with excitement. Thomas said great, Ill see you there, oh Caroline are you done shopping? Yes, why she replied. Would you like a ride home? Well sure if you have time. Anything for you Caroline. your house is just up the road.

So he brought Caroline home and headed back to his house. It was now 2:15 and he's still not home, he's almost there, in about another 5 minutes. He pulled in the driveway and told george to go keep some guests company as some arrived early. He did just that, cause Thomas had to get dressed.

The time is now 3:30 and Thomas walks outside to a big surprise with all he wonderful people from the town that came to his 18th birthday party. Everyone new each other and always helped one another so it was like one big family.

Caroline and Jenny Jane were walking through the corridor that lead them outside to the party. Thomas Sr. rings a little bell and says I want to give a toast to everyone that has came to my sons big day. You are all beautiful people and I want you to feel at home and have fun. As you see we have a big pool, many games to play and lots more to do, and plenty of food to eat. Enjoy yourselves everyone.

As I said before there was another girl that had a crush on Thomas. She was the first one there and the first one to go up to Thomas and talk. They chatted, but has no interest in her, Caroline was in sight and staring at me, I had to do something to get away as I had to get to my dear Caroline. Kelly Lane I have a lot more guests to attend to, ill catch up with you later, theres lots to do and you know George is here. He was asking about you. Really she replied. Most definitely. Matter fact here he comes and he told me he likes you. Talk to him, you both are good people . Ok she replied.

Thomas: Caroline how is your day going so far, are you having fun?

Caroline: Yes, I am, I was talking to Jenny but Paul Mainer came over and wanted to talk to her. I saw you talking to Kelly Lane?

Thomas: Yes, my dear I was talking to her, she came up to me and I didnt want to be rude. George likes her, and I told her that and she seemed happy. I had to come see you Caroline. Can you take a walk with me around the lake?

Caroline: Well sure we can Thomas. (Nervously said)

Thomas: May I take your hand and walk with you my beautiful angel.

Caroline: Why of course let's go and leave this loud music for a while and take a nice walk around the lake together.

Thomas: So what are your plans Caroline now that we're out of high school?

Caroline: Well, I actually have to put college off for a year because I have to watch my little brother, hes 12 now. When he turns 13 then I will figure out what college is for me. I like to design clothes.

Thomas: Wow, thats awesome at least you will have a little time to yourself for a year. I have to leave in 3 weeks to bootcamp, I'm going to be in the Marines.

Caroline: Really I didn't know that was your plan. How come you never told me. I mean I really do like you Thomas.

Thomas: Um, Im very sorry, I just didn't know how to tell you. I mean you are so beautiful and could be with anyone you want. I will be away for at least 4 years. I will write you.

Caroline: Well if that's your dream then I can't tell you what to do.

Thomas: Oh Caroline, come here! (He grabbed her face and kissed her softly). Caroline you are the most beautifulest girl i've ever laid my eyes on and I will do anything for you. You can live here while i'm gone and go watch your brother when they need you. Caroline I love you, I always have. We knew each other since we were 5 and i alway I knew we would be together. Caroline Marry Me.

Caroline: Oh Thomas, I don't know what to say. You left me speechless.

Thomas: Just say you will be mine forever and i'll give you the world my beautiful Caroline.

Caroline: Thomas you are leaving in three weeks and I wont see you for a long time. (With her eyes tearing up, talking with a nervous voice)

Thomas: Oh Caroline, it's only 4 years of our lives, we will have so much more time together when I come back and I promise I will never leave you again.

Caroline: Thomas, I can't. It would be to much for me. I would be worried about you everyday. Not that I won't be thinking about you anyways. Maybe when you come back and I know you will never leave me again.

Thomas: Ok, Caroline we will save it for another time. But I want you to know your love will guide me through my days and nights when i'm gone.

Thomas Sr.: Thomas, come on it's time for your celebration, time to do cake.

Thomas: OK, i'm coming. Come on beautiful lets go, I want you to help me blow out my candles.

As they walked up from the lake holding hands and laughing together, you could see them glowing together. Ok everyone i'm here and i'm wanna make a toast to everyone that came to my party, thank you everyone, you brought with you happiness and joy to my party and I am truly blessed. Thank you all for coming.

Everyone: (Singing the Happy Birthday song)

Thank you everyone, and now I want Caroline to blow out the candles with me. On the count of three let's blow out the candles. one...two...three... (both blow out the candles). Everyone claps and Thomas cuts the cake. I want everyone to continuing to enjoy yourself and thanks again.

Finally, the party's over and everyone went home accept one person and it was Caroline. She stayed a bit longer and they enjoyed their time together. Thomas never brought it up again that night. He just wanted to have fun and enjoy his time with her.

It was midnight and he drove Caroline home. They gave each other a hug and kiss and he left to go back home. He was really heart broken but he didn't want to upset Caroline. She always came over on fridays after three. But this weekend she didn't hear from Thomas. Thomas thought to himself all that week and he decided it was best to stay away from her so he wouldn't have such a hard time leaving. Another week has gone by and he only has a week left until he leaves for boot camp. The phone rings, its Caroline, but Thomas Sr answers the phone, hello is Thomas there, no Im sorry Caroline he is out with George getting the things he needs to leave next week. I will tell him that you called. Ok thank you so much, anytime Caroline, take care. You to bye.

It's finally Thursday and Thomas is nervous. He was thinking about Caroline, but he could not get up the courage to call her back. So he just closed his eyes and went to sleep. The alarm clock is going off at 5:00 am. George was already there to pick him up and drop him off at his bus, to go down south. Thomas was ready by 5:45 and off they went. The shortline bus station was only 10 minutes from his house. Thomas gets out and hugs George and hand him a letter to give Caroline. Take care, see you in a few weeks when you come home, hey just wait a minute I want to see when this bus is going to take off. Ok, George Replied.

Thomas's bus was there, it was not leaving for another 15 min. So he gave the bus driver his luggage and he put on the bus for me, in the baggage storage area under the bus. So I spent my last 15 minute talking to George my best friend since we were 2 years old. Our parents were best friends and we were neighbors ever since we were born. His birthday is September 30, 1907. We were also born in the same year, so he was a few weeks younger. So George what are you going to be doing when im getting all sweaty and chased around with people shouting at me while running through a obstacle course? Well I decided to take a year off, and you know my dad is sick, otherwise Id be right next to you on that bus going with you. Yea, I guess you should spend more time with your dad and help him get a little stronger by helping him exercise even if he doesn't want too. You should give him a little push, he needs it. Since your mom passed away 3 years ago, even I can tell hes not the same person. He seems very depressed. Yeah Tom I think that exactly what I have to do, they haven't got his medication right yet. I know he will snap out of it once I get him up and doing things. But it will take some time. He needs to build up his strength and go out and mingle with other people. That sound good Tom replied. You know you will always be my best bud George, and I love you bud, you need to also take better care of yourself and you know what I mean. I'm not going to bring it up because you know what you gotta do, I believe in you, your very strong, and you can overcome it. Ok Ok Tom enough about that.

Bus Driver: All Aboard, I will be leaving in less then 5 minutes, so get yourselves to the bus boys and gals, so we can leave.

Tom: Ok, I got on the bus and sat in the front seat and had the whole 2 seats to myself. There weren't many people on the bus at this time. I got this feeling and It told me to look out the window, as I looked out the window there she was, my dear Caroline waving me off as tears rolled down her beautiful cheeks. I just wanted to jump of the bus and go give her a big hug goodbye. Wait, Wait, excuse me bus driver can you stop for a moment, and let me say goodbye to my love please, I promise it will be less then a minute. The bus driver said ok, but you have to make it quick I am on a tight schedule. Thank you so much, he jumps out his seat and runs off the bus and runs to her, he picks her up and kisses her as if it was the the last time they would see each other. She smiled and said thank you for coming off the bus to say goodbye. Tom said it was no problem and said its not goodbye it's see you later. She giggled and said Tom I do love you. He said I know you do dear. Listen babe I gotta run. I will write you as soon as I get settled. George has something for you, he is supposed to drop it of to you later today, ok I have to go now. I'll miss you and be thinking of you every night.

Tom runs back to the bus, hops in his seat and thanks the bus driver again. Oh by the way my name is Thomas it's nice to meet you. Well it was nice meeting you too Thomas my name is Carmine. It was a pleasure Tom replied. I appreciate you letting me say goodbye to my good friend. It was no problem. I remember when I was leaving to I had to say goodbye to my girlfriend also. Really you were in the service, yes I was in the service for three terms, thats 12 years, 4 of those years I was in the Reserves. That kept me around home so I could be with my wife. We've been married 40 years now. I'm still in love with her like it was the first day we met. I think that's so cool. She was a good girl who stuck by my side. That's for sure said Tom. That's a great story. I hope my story comes out to be the same as yours. Tom started feeling tired and he fell asleep. It was about 8:00 am and the bus driver said over the loudspeaker, its time to get some breakfast and stretch your legs, and maybe use the bathroom if you gotta go. The time is 8:05 am, please be back to your seats at 8:45 am, we will be on our way and will get there about 11:00 am.

They all get off the bus, and go in the little strip off the highway that had a mcdonalds, and a little diner. Bathrooms were full at the moment, so I am going to get a bite to eat. I went to mcdonalds and ordered a number 3 which was a egg mcmuffin meal that came with a hash brown and a beverage of your choice, I chose to get a larger Orange Juice. As my order was being placed I ran to the bathroom and came back. I had about 10 minutes left and I sat down at a table outside, and this girl comes over, and shes on my bus going to the same place and she asks if she can join me. I said of course you can. What is your name I asked, she said my name is Sara Baker and Im going to be in the Marines when i'm done with boot camp, but my first 2 years im going to be in the reserves so that I can be close to my family. Family is everything to me. I don't know what id do without them. They are my rock. Tom says wow your such a good girl to love and care for your family so much. I can say you are absolutely correct family is the one thing that I have vouching for me and a few good friends that I knew all my life.

Bus Driver: Folks you have 5 minutes to board back on the bus, next stop will be your final destination.

It was time for all the people to board the bus, Tom said come on Sara its time to get on the bus are you done eating? She said yes and they walked to the bus together chatting away about just any and everything, getting to know one another. They get on the bus and Tom asks Sara if she would like to sit with him the rest of the way. She smiles and says ok that would be cool, I just have to go and get my carry on bag a few seats back. He said ok and she came back and said it was really nice meeting you, he said it was also a pleasure meeting you as well. So you are going to be a nurse for the Marines? She said yes. Thats cool, you will be working a lot. So they chatted for about another hour and then she fell asleep and her head fell onto his shoulder. He felt as if she was a beautiful girl with the most piercing blue eyes he had ever seen. He let her sleep and fell asleep himself as his head gently laid on hers. They both slept the rest of the way.

Bus Driver: Good afternoon everyone it is 11:30 and we are at your final destination. They both woke up and looked at eachother like oh my god we fell asleep. Ok sara, it's time to go and get our luggage. So they walked off the bus, grabbed their luggage and was on there way into the building.

Sergeant Gardner: I need everyone to get in line and have your Identification Out when I approach you. When I call you, you will address me as Yes drill Sergeant. All I ask is for your respect and you will receive the same respect back. Do you understand.

Everyone: Yes drill Sergeant.

Sergeant Gardner: Gates, will you step forward.

Thomas Gates: Yes drill sergeant.

Sergeant Gardner: You may now go look on the wall for your dorm and bunk. You will wake up at 4:00 am, go eat, take a shower, take a shower and your bed must be made perfectly every morning. Then you will meet me in the field by 5:30 on the dot. If everything is done right you will be on time everyday, if not you will be scrubbing toilets for the next 2 days. This goes for everyone.

Everyone: Yes drill sergeant.

Sergeant Gardner: After I call your name follow the orders that I had given Mr. Gates.

Everyone: Yes drill Sergeant.

Well as the days past for Gates he knew that everyday was closer to getting home. He wasn't really paying attention to his time there, he stayed focused and did everything that he had to do during his time within the program. Time was going fast because on his free time he spent it with sara, he knew that Caroline was at home and that he didn't write one letter because he was so busy and he was spending a lot of time with sara. Its been 5 weeks already and we only had one week left. They all did so well that the drill sergeant gave them the next week off because they completed everything early.

So Tom asked sara to go out to dinner that Thursday night 2 days before he was to go back home. She said of course and so they went to the local diner. They ordered their food and chatted away. As they were chatting someone went to the jukebox and played a song called Forever my love, it was a slow song. Tom asked sara can I have this dance with you. She was smiling and giggling and she said absolutely. So they danced away holding each other closely knowing that they may never see each other again. Sara said time here went so fast because we spent everyday together and to me I feel that we have a strong connection. Tom replied yes Sara I feel the exact same way. Your eyes are so beautiful that they remind me of the bluest part of the sky, when I look into them I get lost when I stare into them as if I belong, I know it sounds weird but word cannot describe my feelings along with everything else, your just so perfect. Tom leaned in and kissed her and they kissed for about 5 minutes straight. Sara I feel a special connection with you, and I really enjoy all the time we spent together, it means so much to me, but I have to tell you something. Im telling you out of respect, because I do not want to hurt you, and lead you on any further. I have a girl that I liked all my life and she is waiting for me to come back home. Please believe me my heart has a place for you in it. Don't get me wrong, your perfect in everyway That's why I think we should stop seeing each other. I'm so sorry Sara. Don't worry Tom in the little time we spent together will be with me until the day I die. I understand you completely. Just know that every moment with you was like dancing in the clouds. i'm not mad Tom, go home and go back to the life you know. Sara you're such a sweet girl. Are you sure you are ok? Yes replied Sars. Can we a least exchange numbers? Oh yes Tom said. So they gave all their information, including where they lived. Wow Sara your amazing in everyway. One day a lucky guy will get to feel what I did with you. I'll always remember you Sara replied.

It was the last day and the bus should be there at the camp base soon. It was 5:45 am and they only had 15 minutes to be ready to board the bus. Everyone was ready to go waiting at the bus stop near the end of the camp. Everyone but sara, who left at 5:00 am when her father picked her up. Tom was looking everywhere for her and couldn't find her, he had to get back to the bus stop. The bus was there, so they all boarded the bus and again Tom sat in the front seat with thoughts of Sara on his mind. He was saddened that he didn't get to say a proper goodbye and hoped the best for her. He fell asleep as soon as the bus started moving and didn't wake up until the break at 8:00 am to get out and stretch and maybe get a bite to eat. This time he stayed on the bus, still bewildered about sara. He was wondering if he had made a mistake.

Everyone boarded the bus and it would be no time before they returned home. Tom was happy to be going home for a few more weeks to spend time with his family and Caroline. But what Tom did not know yet will ruin all the plans he had. Tom said to the bus driver It was very nice meeting you. The bus driver carmine replied, you to young fellow. It was 5 minutes before he was to get off the bus. George was waiting there for him and also Caroline was there to greet him.

Tom: Getting off the bus with a big smile on his face, when he seen that Caroline was also there. Hey guys how have you been since I've been gone?

Caroline: Everything was good, we all missed you.

George: Hey bud how was it? I knew you would do a good job and pass.

Tom: Yes, it was a little bit to much but I made it through. Caroline I would like to invite you over tonight, would you accept my invitation?

Caroline: Of course Tom I haven't seen you in almost 3 months. Id be honored. (Wondering what George was thinking)

George: Caroline don't you have to watch your brother tonight? (Trying to make an excuse for her not to go to Tom's house)

Caroline: No, George, that's tomorrow night. (knowing George was getting jealous)

George: Oh that's right, I forgot. (Thinking of what he needs to do to tell Tom, he's very nervous)

George: Ok we are finally here home, aren't you happy to be home Tom?

Tom: Definitely, thanks for the ride and Caroline please call me when you get home.

Caroline: Ok Tom I will call you as soon as I get home, as she was talking Tom leaned into give her a kiss, she moved her face so he would kiss her cheek.

Tom:Ok see you later Caroline, I'll be there to pick you up at 5:00pm. (Thinking that was very odd of her to do that)

Caroline: (Calling Tom) Hello, did Tom get home yet? Why yes dear, can you give me one minute to go get him. Yes Ma'am.

Tom: Hello Caroline, So how have you been doing? I missed you so much.

Caroline:Im ok, Tom can you pick me up earlier please.

Tom: Ok what time?

Caronline: Like now, I need to see you.

Tom: Is everything ok Caroline?

Caroline: Yes I just want you to pick me up please.

Tom: Ok, I'll be there in 15 minutes.

As you can see there is one big mess going on here, and Tom doesn't even know it yet. He only caught a glimpse of what Caroline did when they said their goodbyes earlier. Caroline, Afraid what will happen if George were to tell him. So she wanted to tell him herself. She was quite at a lost for words at this point, but it had to be done. She didn't want no trouble between George and Tom and wanted to confess her secret to him herself. Which I think would be the right thing to do. It could go bad. No one knows what will happen next. I hope everything turns out ok, for the sake of everyone. Tom also had a secret to confess, but he didnt know he would have to even talk about it at all because he knew he would never see Sara ever again, or would he?

Tom's car: BEEP BEEP!

Caroline Comes running out her house thinking George would be around. She was so scared to tell Tom that she was so nervous and forgot her pocketbook with something in it she want Tom to have. So she had to run back into her house and get it. She came back and as she got in the car, George drove by and beeped. He was about to pull in her driveway because he knew that they didn't have a date until 5 :00 O'Clock. So he sped off and rushed home. Which Tom and George live right next to each other. There rooms were right in plain sight of each other. They soon approached his house. He parked and then they went in to Toms house. Tom wanted to go in the basement where it was much cooler and there was a pool table and couch down there. It was a comfy place to be. As they been there many times together. As if this day would be different then any other, in Toms mind.

Caroline: Tom I have to tell you something and it cannot wait. (Eyes tearing with a scratchy voice)

Tom: What is it Caroline? You can tell me anything? (Thinking, what could it possibly be, was it the answer to my question before I left? Or was it something more sinister?)

Caroline: Well you see George and I are dating and I wanted to be the one to tell you. I had to tell you right away because I couldn't lie to you. I love him and we will be married this time next year. I'm So sorry Tom It just happened. (Hoping Tom wouldn't be so harsh on her.)

Tom: I don't know what to say to you Caroline, but I have other things to do today, this is what I brought you to my house for, for you to tell me that your sleeping with my ex best friend. I thought you loved me Caroline, I guess I was wrong? Caroline I heard George pull up to his house, you can gladly see yourself out. Please never call me again.

Caroline: I've always loved you Tom, you were my first love and It just happened. It wasn't supposed to end like this. I still want to be friends and you will always be special to me. George was here for me while you were gone.

Tom: I was gone for 6 weeks not 4 years. I could see maybe if I was gone for a long period of time maybe. But what I cant see is you with my best friend. I had a surprise for you, but now I will not tell you. You don't deserve to know. Please go Caroline, I have things to do. Thanks for letting me know now then later. George is looking in my window from his house so just leave and tell him to go find a new best friend. (Trying to keep his tears in, controlling his emotions.)

Caroline: Tom Please don't do this, please let me explain how it happened? (Crying)

Tom: Leave Now Caroline!

Caroline: Runs out his house to Georges next door.

Well I didn't expect this. Things happen in life sometimes that we don't understand why they happen. They just happen and life goes on. Tom was so upset that he was crying and he locked himself in his room for a few days. The phone rings and Tom wasn't going to pick it up because he knew it could only be one of two people, and he wasn't in the right state of mind to talk to them at this time. He has a feeling and picks the phone up anyways. A soft voice says hello, very faint and you could barely hear, the person said is Tom there? Tom replied this is him. Hey Tom it's Sara. All his sadness suddenly disappeared. Hell- hello Sara it's me Tom. She just wanted to call to explain why she hadn't said goodbye. Her dad had picked her up because it was time for her to go get her treatment. Tom said treatment for what Sara? I have cancer, and it was my dream to join the Marines as a nurse so I wanted to go to boot camp to get a feel of what its like out in the field. I'm sorry I didn't tell you. Sara where are you now? Im at home. My treatment starts tomorrow. I wanted to see how things were with you and Caroline? Tom replies there's nothing between me and Caroline she went off with my best friend. But that's ok. I couldn't stop thinking of you since I last seen you. Sara replies really Tom, because I feel the same way and you are the first guy I ever kissed and ever danced with and I wanted to know If I can see you today if possible. Tom replies, where do you live sarah? That's the one thing you never told me? I don't live to far from you. I live on Sparrows lane. Tom says thats only 5 minutes from me Ill be there in 5 minutes please be outside. Ok, sara replied.

Tom was in a better mood and was rushing to go get her, as he walked out, George and Caroline were on there way over to his house. Tom says what are you guys doing? I have to go! We were coming over to talk. Tom replied, I have nothing to say to either of you but I hope everything works out. I have more important things to do.

He hops in his car and peels out. He pulls up and their was the most beautiful girl he has ever seen, her long hair was blowing in the wind with the most beautiful blue eyes ever. Sara opened the door and got in. There wasn't even a hi from Tom he took her face and slowly kissed her soft luscious lips. Sara I can't believe you called. I would have wished that you told me what was up with you. She cried and said I couldn't, our time together was so perfect that I didn't want to scare you away. Sara you would have never scared me away. Tom you did tell me that you were with Caroline. Yes I was being truthful. That's over now. it was over as soon as I got home. She told me and I'm glad she told me as quick as she did. Sara I don't know how to say this, but I fell in love with you in the little time we spent together. Sara was all flustered and didn't know what to say. They get to his house and Sara says wow this is your house? Yes Sara, Tom replied. Tom came and went so fast that George and Caroline were still outside talking to Toms parents, Tom paid them no mind and went in to his house and went straight in to his bedroom.

Tom: Sara how sick are you? Why would you think I would think differently of you even though you are sick.

Sara; I didn't want to ruin our moment together.

Tom: You would have not ruined anything! How sick are you babe?

Sara: I have stage 4 breast cancer and i'm so tired of treatment. It worked for a while. Then it spread throughout my body. They gave me not even 2 more months to live. I told my dad that i'm not doing my treatment because yes maybe it will prolong my life a week or so but it will not ever go away. I'm just tired of it. I just want to spend what life I have with someone that I love and truly care for before I die. Will you be that person Tom? Our time together was so special and that's why I called you. Please Tom I love you.

Tom: Of course Sara I love you too. You can stay with me for as long as you want. Just as long as your father is ok with it.

Sara: Yes I told him already that if I don't come back that I will be with you. He told me just to call him every night. Oh Tom I can't believe I found love before my life was to be over.

So they spent the next 2 weeks together, he took her everywhere he could think of, they went to the beach, to an amusement park, and a few places that she wanted to go. She bought her dad a keepsake so he could always remember their times together.

Tom proposed to her, she said yes and the wedding was held at his house, it wasn't to big, he even invited George and Caroline. They had a beautiful wedding with the song that they first listened to on one of their dates out. It was Called "I cant believe your in love with me" By Jimmy Mchugh.
