Washing your hands properly is essential to ensure thorough cleaning and to eliminate potential pathogens.

To effectively wash your hands, follow these steps:

Wet your hands with clean, running water. The water can be warm or cold, as the temperature does not affect the effectiveness of handwashing.

Apply soap to your hands. Any type of soap, whether liquid or bar, is effective. Make sure to lather the soap well to create a rich lather.

Rub your hands together vigorously. Scrub all surfaces of your hands, including the palms, back of hands, fingers, and under the nails. Pay attention to your fingertips and nails. Use the opposing palm to clean your fingertips and scrub under your nails, or use a nail brush if available.

Rinse your hands thoroughly with clean, running water. Ensure that all soap is removed from your hands.

Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. If using a towel, make sure it is clean and reserved for hand drying only.

If possible, use the towel to turn off the faucet or use a tissue to avoid recontamination.

It is important to note that hand sanitizers can be used as an alternative to handwashing when soap and water are not readily available. However, hand sanitizers should contain at least 60% alcohol to effectively kill germs. When using hand sanitizer, apply a sufficient amount to cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until dry.

In addition to regular handwashing, it is important to wash your hands at key times to prevent the spread of germs:

Before and after handling food: Washing your hands before cooking or eating helps prevent the transfer of bacteria and other contaminants from your hands to the food you consume.

After using the restroom: Proper hand hygiene after using the restroom helps prevent the spread of fecal-oral pathogens that can cause gastrointestinal illnesses.

After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose: Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing is important, but washing your hands afterward is equally crucial to eliminate any germs that may have landed on your hands.

After being in public spaces: When you come into contact with surfaces or objects touched by others, such as doorknobs, handrails, or shopping carts, it is important to wash your hands afterward to remove any potential germs.

Before and after caring for someone who is sick: When providing care to someone who is ill, washing your hands before and after is essential to prevent the spread of pathogens and protect both yourself and the person you are caring for.

By following proper hand hygiene practices and washing your hands regularly, you can protect yourself and others from the transmission of infectious diseases. Handwashing is a simple yet effective way to maintain personal hygiene, reduce the spread of germs, and promote overall health and well-being.
