From The Self To God

When a broken heart learns to reconnect

By Fazalullah Published 6 months ago • 4 min read

Life is never exactly what we imagine it to be. Sometimes everything seems to fall perfectly into place, and other times a single moment arrives that shatters everything--- dreams, relationships, hopes… even our sense of self. In those moments, a person feels the deepest kind of loneliness, even if they are surrounded by people. And yet, perhaps that is exactly where the real journey begins — the journey “from the self to God.” This is not a physical path, nor does it require a specific place or time. It is something internal, a quiet transformation that takes place within the heart. And more often than not, it begins when a person feels they have nowhere else left to turn. The exhaustion of the soul — an unseen pain Most of us are tired, but we don’t fully understand what kind of tiredness it is. It is not the fatigue of the body. It is something deeper — the exhaustion of the soul. It is the kind of tiredness that sleep cannot fix, that hides behind laughter, and becomes even more noticeable in silence. We chase the world — success, money, approval, recognition. But the more we gain, the more a strange emptiness grows within. Why does this happen? Because true peace for the soul is not found in the world, but in being connected to the Creator. When a person becomes distant from God, they may have everything and still feel empty. But when they turn back to God, they may have nothing in their hands and still feel complete. The Qur’an — not just a book, but a living conversation We often reduce the Qur’an to something we simply read, almost like a ritual. But in reality, it is a living message — a divine speech meant for every era, every heart, and every situation. Have you ever noticed how, when you read it with sincerity, certain verses feel as if they were written specifically for you? It feels as though the words are speaking directly into your life, your pain, your thoughts. That is what makes it more than a book. It becomes a guide that pulls a person out of themselves and leads them back to God. Even a few minutes of reading with presence and attention can leave an impact far deeper than hours of distracted effort. A single verse, a short prayer, one sincere prostration — sometimes these small moments are enough to pull a person out of the darkest emotional places. When the heart breaks… There are moments in life when the heart truly breaks. A betrayal by someone close, an unfinished dream, or sudden changes in circumstances can shake a person from within. In such times, we try everything. We reach out to people, try to distract ourselves, stay busy, keep moving — but the heaviness inside does not go away. And then comes a moment… When everything else falls silent, and a person simply collapses into prostration. That prostration is not like any other. There are fewer words, but more tears. Less speaking, more surrendering. And in that moment, something begins to change. Because breaking down before God is not weakness — it is the purest form of strength. It is the point where a person finally sees themselves without illusion. Closeness to God — a feeling, not a formality Being close to God is not limited to specific acts of worship. It is a state of the heart. When a person starts remembering God in everyday actions, when even small decisions are made with the thought of “What would please my Lord?”, something slowly shifts inside them. This closeness is not dependent on silence or noise. It can be felt in the middle of a busy life and also in solitude. It is not tied to a place — it is tied to sincerity. A heart that is honest will always find its way back. The journey is never complete The journey from the self to God is not completed in a day, a week, or even a month. It is a continuous process. There are moments when a person feels very close, and moments when they feel distant again. Sometimes worship feels natural and light, and at other times even simple acts feel heavy. But the real question is not how many times a person falls. The real question is how many times they return. God does not turn away from those who keep coming back to Him — even if they keep losing their way again and again. A small step If you are reading this and feel a quiet restlessness inside… If something within you feels incomplete, as if something is missing… Perhaps that feeling itself is a sign. You do not need a dramatic change. Just one small step is enough. Sit in silence for a while. Listen to your heart without distraction. And speak to God in your own words — as a servant speaks to their Lord. No special phrases. No perfect prayer. Just honesty. Because God does not look at the words. He looks at the heart behind them. And remember this: You are not walking this journey alone. When you take one step toward Him, He moves many steps toward you. Perhaps that is where real peace begins — not in having everything, but in returning to the One who was always there.
