Friendly Heartbreak
Friendships that vanished
Everybody knows about heartbreak. Whether it's a breakup or losing a loved one, or whether its the letter of rejection you received after longing for this job, this school, or this home for so long. I find that one of the most underrated "heartbreak situation" is when you lose a friend.
I'm not talking about losing a friend through a fight, or someone moving away. I'm not talking about having a friend who is a "little more" than just a friend. I'm talking about those friendships that you look back on in years to come and realize that it was just over.
Maybe it was that life was too busy, you both got jobs or relationships, and surrounded yourself with other people. Maybe one of you went off to college or university out of town and neither of you ever looked back. Maybe nothing happened and you just stopped talking until years later you look back and wonder what happened.
You look back on these friendships and these people you once loved, and can't help but feel... lonely. Any photo, video, or mention of their name brings back a flood of memories that you had forgotten about. There was never a dull moment with this person. There was never a time that they were unable to put a smile on your face. Walking along the busy streets, goofing around just to make each other laugh, or taking videos and photos of each other so that you'll remember those days and everything that you accomplished together.
You made plans together; maybe it was for school, or to travel, to work together, or just plans the following week to grab dinner. You couldn't begin to imagine what life would be like without them, but you don't need to think that way, because that would never happen right?
You look back at the memories and just smile. Life was so good then, so what happened? Suddenly the world seems to become grey once again. Those memories are just a thing of the past. The truth is, you've just gone your separate ways; you are two totally different people than what you once were.
But once upon a time, that person made you laugh. They made you enjoy life to the fullest, and encouraged you in everything that you wanted to accomplish. Without that person, you wouldn't be who you are today. It doesn't matter if they were in your life for a few months or since birth. Once someone is that important to you, they don't fade from the memories. Hold on to those memories. Make the most of every moment that you have. Take photos, videos, write a note... because sometimes the only thing that can keep us going forward is the memories of what once was, and the hope that maybe things can turn around again, and that we can feel the way we once did.
