Fiskars Friends
Or, ‘How I learned to stop worrying and love cutting fabric.’

In 2012, I was in Bunnings in Mascot, Sydney. It was a bright Saturday morning and we’d just had absurd snag sandwiches out the front with many vibrant folks. Once inside, we grabbed the one thing we needed then spent the vast majority of the wandering the aisles for various plants, accoutrements, and bits/bobs for our new apartment.
My flatmate had brought along his new boyfriend Rylend who I really hadn’t been getting along with, but you know, you smile and be friendly and eat sausages at Bunnings with them because you’re supposed to be a nice person these days.
As we perused, I heard Rylend call out to me from the end of an aisle to follow him to see something. I didn’t know what on Earth he could possibly want to show me but I was curious nonetheless. With great excitement, he showed me a pair of Fiskars Cuts+More 5-in-1 Multi-Purpose Scissors. I wasn’t sure why, considering how low priced they were.
You see, Rylend had used these scissors before. Knowing that I’m a professional costume maker, he insisted I buy a pair. He said I would never need another pair of scissors. I did not believe him for a second. Fabric shears cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars, not forty.
But, in the name of getting along with Rylend and adding new scissors to the kitchen drawer if they weren’t as good as this hysterical Fiskars obsessed lad insisted, I thought, ‘Why not? They’re only $40.’ (Or thereabouts. I don’t recall the cost precisely.)
As you’ll recall, this was a certain sunny Saturday in 2012.
2012, ladies and gentlemen and everybody in between.
I am *still* using this same pair of Fiskars Cuts+More 5-in-1 Multi-Purpose Scissors to cut everything from sheer silk to plastic corset boning to wool to millinery wire and back again, then open a drink afterwards. I’ve bought another couple of pairs over the years since, but the original pair is still going strong!
Epilogue:
It is with heavy heart that I report Rylend and my flatmate broke up not long after. But he and I had bonded so well after the Fiskars Affair that he and I remain friends today and I’ve since fallen out of contact with the old flatmate. So thank you, Fiskars. I and my portfolio (see attached image for a few little pieces made with my Fiskars) thank you for the Fiskars Cuts+More 5-in-1 Multi-Purpose Scissors.
