Finding Purpose in Unexpected Ways

How the Loss of My Grandfather Led Me to Discover My Passion

By JazzyPublished about a year ago 3 min read

There have been several incidents in my life that have had a significant impact on who I am today. However, one incident stands out as the most life-changing experience I have ever had.

It happened when I was in college. I had just completed my second year, and I was feeling restless and uncertain about my future. I had always been a good student and had followed a traditional path of going to college, but I was starting to question whether that was the right path for me. I was feeling unfulfilled and unhappy, and I knew that something needed to change.

One day, I received a call from my dad. He told me that my grandfather had passed away unexpectedly. I was devastated. My grandfather had been one of the most important people in my life, and his passing left a gaping hole in my heart.

I flew home to be with my family, and we spent the next few days grieving together. During that time, I realized that life is short and that we never know when it will end. I started thinking about my own life and what I wanted to accomplish. I knew that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life feeling unfulfilled and unhappy.

After my grandfather's funeral, I made a decision that would change my life forever. I dropped out of college. It was a difficult decision to make, and I knew that it would disappoint my family and friends. However, I also knew that I needed to follow my own path and pursue my own dreams.

I spent the next few months soul-searching and exploring my passions. I started writing, something that had always been a hobby of mine. I joined a local theater group and discovered a love for acting. I also started volunteering for different organizations and found that I loved helping others.

After dropping out of college, I found myself in unfamiliar territory. I had always been a straight-A student, and suddenly, I was no longer on a set path. It was scary and liberating at the same time.

As I explored my passions, I discovered that I had a talent for writing. I had always enjoyed writing stories, but I had never considered it as a career path. However, as I worked on my first novel, I found that writing was not just a hobby, but a calling.

It wasn't an easy road, though. Writing is a solitary pursuit, and there were many times when I felt lonely and unsure of myself. There were also many rejections along the way. I submitted my novel to several agents and publishers, but they all turned me down. It was discouraging, but I didn't give up.

Instead, I kept writing. I started a blog and began writing for different websites. I also took writing classes and attended writing conferences. I knew that I had to keep working on my craft if I wanted to succeed.

It wasn't until a few years later that I finally landed my first book deal. It was a small press, but it was a start. From there, things slowly began to pick up. I landed a literary agent, and she helped me sell my second book to a major publisher.

Today, I have published several books and have worked with many different publishers. I have also had the opportunity to travel and speak at various events. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for every step along the way.

Looking back on my life, I can see that the incident of my grandfather's passing was a turning point. It made me realize that life is short and that we should never take it for granted. It also made me realize that we have the power to change our lives and pursue our dreams.

If I had never dropped out of college, I may have never discovered my passion for writing. I may have settled for a job that didn't fulfill me or made choices based on what others expected of me. Instead, I followed my heart and found a career that I love.

In conclusion, the incident of my grandfather's passing changed my life in profound ways. It taught me the value of taking risks and following my heart. It also taught me that success is not always easy, but it's worth pursuing if it's something we truly want.
