Who Was Herbert Wigwe?

Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe was a Nigerian banker and entrepreneur who was most popular for being the CEO of Access Holdings Plc, traded as Access Corporation until the time of his death. Wigwe was also the Group Managing Director/CEO of Access Bank PLC, from January 2014 till April 2022.

He was also in the process of opening Wigwe University, a private university based in Rivers State that was earlier this week in the press for its high tuition cost. The school is supposed to officially commence operations in September of 2024 with Herbert and his family in attendance. Now, that is no more, because of his sudden death and its tragic nature.

How Did He Die?

Herbert and his wife

Herbert Wigwe is reported to have died following a helicopter crash in California, near the Nevada border in the United States of America. According to reports, his wife and son were also onboard along with about five to six others. The New York Times reports that no survivors have been located as of Saturday morning according to authorities on ground.

Speaking on the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration said that the Eurocopter EC130 helicopter crashed at around 10 p.m. local time near Nipton, Calif, an unincorporated community about 60 miles south of Las Vegas in eastern San Bernardino County. It is unclear as at the time of this reporting where the helicopter departed from and where it was headed.

Herbert as a father

This is all around a very sad day for the Wigwe family, Rivers State people who held him and his family in such high regard, the country, and the world at large. This is such a sad and sudden way for Herbert Wigwe to leave this world and I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends at this time. May their souls rest in perfect peace.
