Dream Date

Scars we live with

By Tash HobbsPublished 6 years ago • 3 min read

She looked into the mirror her dress was a bright shade of crimson, the colour of blood. She thought about how it made her cheeks shine out of the mess of her dark hair. Should she wear it up or down?? Pinning it back she could see the small scar on the side of her left temple. It doesn’t matter she thought he is never going to like me or my hair she sighed, not with this ugly scar she thought.

Bridget was 24 years old and she had never been on a proper date. Once she had a coffee chat in the café she worked in but that was only with her boss Eric. Eric was always busy so it was weird he asked her to sit with him that day in the café. Watching him trying to make small talk was even weirder and she wanted just to leave so she could go back to watching him from afar. Ever since she started at Café Carter she had loved him. From the first day she tripped up the front stairs and he ran out to check if she was OK. He probably just did not want a lawsuit she told herself after all who would love a scarred face like mine.

Back to the dress, yes Crimson. Hair check, nothing in the teeth check, sending butterflies down to her stomach check. Something to settle the nerves she said pouring herself a lovely glass of merlot. The fruity notes warmed her insides and made her feel so nice. It almost made her forget the fact her sister Georgia had set her up on this blind date. Who goes on blind dates anyway she told herself? The truth was she didn’t want to be with anyone but Eric but she knew that would never happen. He was tall and handsome with a boyish charm. She wondered how a guy like him ever ended up running a mom and pop coffee shop.

It was at that moment Georgia came barrelling into her room without knocking. “Oh you looks so amazing” said Georgia. “Why don’t you wear your hair up she offered?”. “Cause of this Amity said pointing to the scar on her temple”. “You can hardly see it” offered Georgia “besides I know your date wont mind”. “Mmmm” said Amity not impressed but pulling her hair into a messy bun. “There, happy Georgia” asked Amity.

Would he really not care she thought what kind of freak doesn’t care?? Just then the door bell rang out making Amity jump. She thought about touching up her make up one last time but decided instead to take another large gulp of her Merlot. This is too good to waste she thought. Her father George opened the door. Standing there silently he waited for the young man to say hello first…”Hello George” the man said with a large smile across his cheeky face. “I’m here for Amity” he said. “You better come in” said George.

I better go down and see what horror awaits me thought Amity. Sensing that Amity was still anxious Georgia gave her a hug and said “Trust me sis, you got this”. Coming down the hall on the way to the stairs she could hear her Dad and her date talking. She wanted to run in the other direction and away from this. Persisting she listened closer she thought she could tell the voice, it sounded so familiar. Rounding the corner the dates back was to Amity but she could tell who it was. Turning around she knew that face…it was her dream date Eric!!!!

“Hello” smiled Eric. “Hello” stuttered Amity “what are you doing here?”. “Its our big date” he said still grinning. Still in a daze they moved towards the door. “Don’t be mad at Georgia for telling me” said Eric. “I’ve always loved you ever since you fell at my shop door and cut your temple”. “I’ve always loved you and that scar”.
