Dream Date

Long term co-workers; first time daters

As the waiter made his way through the busy restaurant, Alice and Michael took their seats. “Can I get you each something to drink?” asked the waiter, as he reached the handsome young couple. The pair barely registered his question, unable to keep their eyes off of one and another.

“I fancy a merlot. Do you have any merlot?” Alice eventually looked up to the waiter to ask.

The waiter politely smiled and nodded back, “of course madam. We have a fine selection. I’ll bring the wine menu over right away.”

However, before he could turn and leave, Alice stopped him, “no need. We’ll take the first one you can find.” With that, Alice returned to undressing Michael with her eyes, seemingly dismissing the waiter.

Again, the waiter smiled politely, this time with an uncomfortable twist, “I’m sure you’d much rather see a wine list. Afterall, it’s traditional for customers to select their own preference.”

Alice snapped her gaze up to the waiter, intimidating him with her intensity, “listen, we’ve already told you, we don’t care. Just bring us whatever merlot you can find.” As she turned back to her partner, the waiter realised that whilst her intensity intimidated him, the way with his she seemed to be playfully toying with him, outright scared him.

“A bottle or a glass?” he managed to ask his difficult customer, knowing full well that whatever answer she gave was bound to be one he wouldn’t enjoy.

Finally, it was her date’s turn to speak. Addressing Alice, he offered his opinion, “what do you say? It’s probably a bottle isn’t it?”

Alice mused for a few seconds, playfully eyeing her date before offering the final decision, “I think we’ll probably just take a glass each,” she informed the waiter, finally ending his torment and releasing him from the conversation. She leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands, “it’s probably a good idea to not get too drunk on our first date.”

Michael laughed in a sexy kind of way, the kind you only ever see in the movies. Which seemed at odds with Michael himself, who would look quite out of place on the movie screen. He was by no means unattractive, but his face was not as defined as a movie stars, in fact, from certain angles one could almost see the start of a second chin. Add to this the sight of his gorgeous black mane was already making a slow retreat towards the rear of the skull and it’s fair to say that he leaned a little too closely to ‘average’ to suit a sexy laugh.

“I’m surprised it took us this long. I’ve been waiting ages for you to ask me out,” teased Alice. Whilst both were equally confident, Alice was always the far more forward of the two.

“I didn’t think it would be your sort of thing,” retorted Michael, trying to match Alice’s playfulness.

Alice leaned back in her chair, “dating in general? Or you?”

Michael couldn’t contain his wry smile, “both,” he shrugged.

A second waiter then appeared at the table, bringing with him two glasses of merlot, placing one each in front of Michael and Alice, along with a menu each. “Your waiter will be back with you in a few minutes to take your order,” he informed the couple before leaving to continue his busy shift. They both took a sip of their merlot before opening the menus, although only Michael was really reading it.

“Why wouldn’t I be interested?” Alice continued their conversation. “You’re a good-looking guy and we’ve always gotten on so well. We’re a good team. And dating, well dating’s always fun.”

Michael took another sip of his drink before responding with a smile, trying to be sexy for his date and hoping it was working. It wasn’t the sexiest thing Alice had ever seen but she was already invested in the man sitting opposite her. She didn’t need him to try and seduce her. “To be honest,” he smiled, showing an honest vulnerability, “I always thought you were a little out of my league.” It was a comment that most passers by would likely agree with. In comparison to Michaels modest attractiveness, Alice was easily better looking. Of course, she wasn’t perfect. Michael knew all too well that behind the makeup her face often bore blemishes and she’d complained often enough at how she always felt as though her breasts were too small for her slightly curvier frame. But her outward confidence more than made up for any kind of physical flaws and made most people she encountered immediately enamoured with her.

Alice responded by licking her lips and raising her eyebrows in a seductive manor. This was followed by a brief moment of silence as Michael studied his menu, which was broken by Alice, who picked up her glass and began to swirl the claret liquid inside. “You’re so modest,” she teased, “which really works in your favour by the way,” she continued her playful back and forth with her partner. At this moment, whilst Michael was searching his menu for something to satisfy his hunger, Alice noticed a small mark on his collar. “Look at you, you’ve got a little something,” she informed him as she dipped her napkin into the jug of water that came with the table and reached across to wipe way the small splatter of blood.

“Oh thanks,” Michael replied, somewhat awkwardly as his date wiped his shirt collar clean. “I thought I got it all.”

“It’s always easy to miss some,” she assured him. “I had fun today,” she exclaimed, prompted by the mark on Michael’s collar.

“I didn’t,” replied Michael.

“Did you hear him scream? It was such a weird sound,” Alice reflected upon the events preceding the date.

Michael shifted a little uncomfortably, “I don’t like it when they scream. It makes me feel…things.”

Alice put down her glass, “modest and sensitive. Damn. If you’re trying to seduce me, you’re doing a hell of a job.” Michael shrugged. “Besides, we’ve been doing this for years. How are you not used to it yet?”

“In my defence,” Michael replied, “most of our jobs are usually pretty straight forwards and very smooth.”

At this moment, their petrified waiter returned to the table, struggling to hold his composure but just about managing, still recovering from their initial encounter. “What can I get you both?” he dutifully enquired.

“Umm,” Michael pondered, still perusing the menu. “Sorry,” his manors suddenly caught up with his hunger, “where are my manors? Ladies first,” he offered, gesturing towards his date.

Alice had never really even looked at her menu. She found her appetite was far more satisfied by Michael, who she had barely taken her eyes off of all evening. She seemed to consider her options for a moment whilst eyeing up her date, like a wild beast sizing up it’s prey. “I think we should just get out of here,” she announced.

Michael looked at her, then to the waiter and back to her again, “I like you’re enthusiasm,” he smiled, “but maybe we should eat first?”

Her mind was made up. Alice finished her glass of merlot in one swift chug before she collected her bag from the back of the chair, taking out the money for the drinks as she did so, throwing it on the table. “No, we’re going,” she handed her menu to the poised waiter, “thank you.”

Michael, knowing he had little choice in the matter, finished his own drink and stood up. Alice grabbed him by the arm as they made their way towards the exit, through the crowd of daters, none of whom could match Alice for passion or confidence. “I really am quite hungry though,” he admitted to Alice.

She pulled him closer, “we’ll order something on the way. A little half time snack,” she offered as a solution. A solution as it turns out, that pleased Michael very much, bringing out in him a smile, that knew he was the luckiest man on Earth. And it was quite clear, as they stepped into the taxi at the front of the taxi rank, just outside the restaurant, that Alice felt just as lucky.
