Saptah Festival: Embracing the Power

It is also known as Vasco Saptah. During the holy month of Shravan, Vasco engages in the festivities of the hundred-year-old Vasco Saptah festival. It is said that in 1896, when an epidemic broke out in Vasco and people started dying as a result, the locals resorted to Lord Damodar, an incarnation of Shiva, for assistance. A sacred coconut was transported from the well-known Damodar Temple in Zambaulim (22 km from Margao), where it was set at Vasco as a heavenly symbol to be venerated.

Their perseverance paid off, and the outbreak subsided. A prominent resident gave their home so that a Lord Damodar idol might be installed there. The main location for the event is still this little temple that is connected to the original home.

Three Kings Feast: Bond with Tradition

The Three Kings Feast is one of Goa's most prominent celebrations. This event is organized and enjoyed by Christians and non-Christians equally and is held in the villages of Verem in North Goa and Cansaulim in South Goa. This feast is dedicated to The Lady of Mount Carmel, Virgin Mother Mary with newborn Jesus in her lap, who is revered as the Goddess of fertility and is thought to be the defender of humanity. According to traditions, two sets of footprints have been carved on a neighboring hill, one of an adult and one of an infant. Moreover, it is thought that Mother Mary rested in a depression on a large rock. The Vangodds of the Gauncars (indigenous Goans) organize the celebration with great excitement and vigor. Flowers, gold jewelry, candles, garlands, and incense sticks adorn the Virgin Mary's idol.

The festival's last day is maybe the most important. Three boys from each community, aged 8 to 12, are chosen to symbolize The Three Kings. They ride their horses, each on their traditional road called Paz, and eventually meet.

Shigmo: The Day of Colors

Shigmo, also known as Shishirotsava, is an important Hindu festival in the state of Goa. This celebration is divided into two parts: Dhakto Shigmo and Vhadlo Shigmo. Dhakto, or little Shigmo, is concerned with farmers, laborers, and rural residents. People of all classes and professions celebrate Vhado or Big Shigmo on a much grander scale.

This celebration was created to commemorate the return of soldiers who had left their homes and families to battle the invaders. On the penultimate day of the celebration, a spirit known as the Gade pada is reported to enter the dancers. The end is marked by a group bath known as the Mand davarap.

Shigmo is known for its folk dances, street dramas, and artistically constructed floats depicting themes from local and Hindu mythology. People play a variety of musical instruments such as flutes, dhols, drums, trumpets, and so on. Music and traditional dances are both featured in the main procession, which begins in Ponda and travels across Goa over the following three days.

The festival's main attraction is the recreation of numerous legendary scenarios and traditional dances. Every year, hundreds of visitors and residents go to see this breathtaking display of plays, music, dance, and lights.
