depression behind a smile

true story and info

By Ash DesindPublished 12 months ago • 3 min read

Just because someone’s smiling doesn’t mean they’re actually happy.

Some people smile just to keep up appearances… so the people close to them don’t worry.

They think that maybe if they smile enough, the problems will go away.

Maybe something good will happen if they just keep pretending.

If it’s a bad home life, maybe they think their mom and dad won’t split up.

Or maybe they’ll finally get noticed.

Or the yelling will stop if they just smile.

If it’s school, maybe they think the bullies will stop.

Maybe their fake friends will start to care.

Maybe their grades will go up — if they just smile.

But sometimes… it’s a lot more than just a smile.

Sometimes the anxiety gets so bad they have to lie to themselves.

Tell their brain they’re okay.

Maybe it’ll stop, maybe it won’t.

Maybe the depression hits so hard they can’t even think of a reason to stay.

Maybe they feel so alone they start to think they deserve it.

Idk. It’s hard to explain.

Even when things start to get a little better, something always breaks again.

Their dad comes home angry.

Their friends suddenly turn.

And all those thoughts come rushing back like they never left.

It’s scary how easy it is to fake being okay.

Scary how people believe it.

They see a smile and think it means you’re fine.

If anyone ever reads this… maybe just remember — the person smiling next to you might be fighting something you can’t see.

Don’t assume they’re okay just because they look like it.

Everyone’s got something they’re carrying. Even the ones who laugh the loudest.

Sometimes I think about what it would be like if people were honest.

Like if someone asked, “How are you?” and the other person said, “Not good, actually,”

and it didn’t make everything weird.

If people could just say the truth without feeling like they’re a problem.

Maybe that would change things.

I wish people knew that caring doesn’t mean fixing everything.

Sometimes it just means noticing.

Just… being there.

That’s all.

Sometimes that’s enough to make someone stay another day.

Maybe that’s all I want.

For someone to actually see me.

Not the fake smile, not the “I’m fine,”

but the person underneath — tired, scared, still trying.

Maybe everyone wants that.

Idk what tomorrow will be like.

Maybe it’ll be the same. Maybe it won’t.

But writing this down makes it feel a little lighter somehow.

Like letting the words out makes them hurt less.

And if someone ever finds this… I hope they know they’re not alone.

Because maybe that’s what’s behind every smile —

a little pain, a little hope,

and a quiet wish that someone will understand.Next time try to help because you know never know how hard some one is fighting
