The field of psychology has long been exploring the mysteries of the mind and behavior, and many amazing discoveries have been made! Some are even more fascinating than others. Did you know that using punctuation in your text messages can make you appear insincere? If you're ready for a thrilling ride, then prepare yourself – these 5 astonishing psychological facts could explain some of the things you and others do!

Number 1 - Having a Plan B Can Hobble Your Plan A

In experiments conducted at the University of Pennsylvania, it was found that those volunteers who had a fallback plan tended to be less successful than those who didn't. This outcome is tied to the expectation theory of Victor H. Vroom which states that motivation is tied in to the potential for success. The mere presence of an alternative can lead to decreased motivation and hamper success. Therefore, it is wise to consider a variety of options, but one should bear in mind that having too many preconceived ideas can hinder overall success.

Number 2 - We Care More For An Individual Than For A Massive Tragedy

In a study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania, groups of people were offered incentives to donate to charities. The first group was presented a picture of a starving girl, the second group were made aware of the staggering statistic that millions will starve to death, and the third was shown both. It was found that those who viewed the image of the starving girl donated twice as much as the group that heard the statistics alone, with the second group donating the least. This is attributed to the fact that, when a problem appears too huge, we can feel insignificant and are unable to effect a successful outcome. A single starved girl, however, possesses more potential for change.

Number 3 - It Requires Five Positive Things to Outweigh a Single Negative

You may have heard it's best to focus on the positive, but do you know why? This is due to the negativity bias, which makes us think more on the negative traits rather than the positive ones. So keep that in mind – try to strive for a life where five things make you cheer and only one thing that doesn't.

Number 4 - Food Tastes Better When Made By Somebody Else

Have you ever wondered why food prepared by someone else has its own unique taste and flavor? This is due to the excitement and anticipation of awaiting a meal cooked by someone else. When a meal you make yourself is something planned out ahead of time, the thrill of waiting for the results isn't equal to a delectable feast prepared by a beloved. In addition, if the meal is served later, the anticipation is gone and so is the flavor.

Number 5 - We Prefer Knowing Something Bad Is Coming Than Being Uneasy

When someone says, "I need to tell you something", have you ever felt a knot in your stomach? Your thoughts immediately scatter as a multitude of bad options come to mind. Researchers have found that knowing something bad is coming is preferable than being unsure. This is because our brains, when left in the dark, will predict a huge range of outcomes, both good and bad, resulting in aimless anxiety. So there you have it – five amazing psychological facts to make your mind go wild! Now that you're familiar with psychological intricacies, perhaps you could forge something amazing!
