Dating a person has been used for years so that people can figure out what they want in a relationship and what type of person they are meant to be with. However, if this practice isn’t taken seriously, then you could end up in a cycle of dating one person after another without finding strong commitment or an equitable partner. Since dating involves two people, it is important to know that even though you are watching the actions of your partner and paying attention to their decisions, he or she may be doing the same to you. Therefore, there are four things that you should never do when dating a person.

1. Do not talk negatively about him or her to your family.

If you are planning on making things long term with your partner, you might not want to create a situation where your parents or siblings disapprove of him or her. The more negative things that you say about your partner, the more ill will your family is likely to have towards that person. So, it is better to say the good things about him or her than to cloud their minds with negative thoughts.

2. Do not go to others to solve your relationship conflicts.

When dating another person, there are bound to be arguments, but if you are going to last, then it is important to solve these issues as a team. Involving other people can make communication between you and your partner difficult and can bring further conflict into the relationship. It is better that you two learn to work things out together, because after all there will be other barriers in your relationship in the future.

3. Do not leave your partner out when you go on outings with friends.

The person your dating is supposed to be the person that you are thinking about marrying one day. Therefore, if you plan to keep your friends in your life, which most people do, you need to make sure that your partner and your friends get along. You don’t want your partner to feel left out because you are always going out with other people, leaving them at home alone, wondering when you are coming back. Involve them instead, and though sometimes it is okay to have a little time out by yourself, don’t forget that they are now a part of your life and may need a little outing themselves.

4. Do not forget about their responsibilities and their dreams.

Being in a relationship involves a lot of sharing, so it is important that you give your partner time to be with his or her family, time to work, and time to dream. Just as you are juggling trying to take care of things in your life, so is he or she. Therefore, make sure that you don’t always put your dreams and responsibilities as a headliner. You need to share, so that your partner can feel like he or she is tackling the issues in his or her life as well.

There are probably several other things that you should and shouldn’t do in a relationship, but these four are key. In order to maintain a healthy relationship, it is important to care for each other, treat each other as equals, and resolve conflicts as a team.

Now, this is advice for those in a healthy relationship. If you are not in a healthy relationship, or there is some kind of abuse occurring, you must dismiss some of these rules and tell someone that can help you.
