2 Lessons on How To Make Your Relationship Last - Simi

Nigerian singer Simi is one half of one of the most celebrated couples in Nigeria. She is married to fellow singer, Adekunle Gold, with who she shares a daughter. The two have often been called 'couple goals' by many and now during a new interview with The Beat 99.9FM, Simi is sharing some tips on how to make relationships last. Here is what the singer had to say.

Giving two tips on how to make your relationship last, Simi said:

SIMI: First of all, you have to like the person. I'm not saying love, I'm not talking about butterflies, because butterflies go to sleep. They wake up, but they go to sleep. You have to like them. You have to like them enough to want it to work. I always say it - there was a time when the trend was, especially for women, they say "women if you're husband is acting like he doesn't love you, just pray". The thing is one person cannot make a relationship work. By virtue, the essence of a relationship is that it is two people, or for some now, three, four. But the essence of a relationship is not between one person, it's between two people. So if only one person is interested in having this thing work, it's not going to work. It's just one person suffering. So I think that actually liking someone, and actually wanting to be there and put that work in is important.

SIMI: And then communication, there's a lot of mind readers in relationships. They are just there assuming things. "Oh, I can't believe you said that", but they're not saying it, they're reacting to things they're assuming is happening. There are no perfect people, and when people hear that, they think it's about infidelity, no. Even like the way someone says something to you or the way they don't remember something that's important to you, or the way they don't come through for you on a day that you need. It might be anything, there are no perfect people. But understanding that and putting the effort to be the best version of yourself for this person you say that you love. I think just doing that, and as you said, choosing the person everyday. It's not just one choice. You choose today, you wake up tomorrow, and choose again and again.
