Shadows Lurk

As much as she dreaded sleeping in the house, or in the room her father happily chose for her, Adley made her bed nervously. Every creaking sound or groaning sound the house made, caused Adley to jump out of her skin. She hated walking on egg shells, never knowing if when she turned around, something would be there... staring at her.

"Don't worry, Addie," she said to herself. "It's just your mind playing tricks on you."

"Adley, supper is ready!" her mother called from downstairs.

This cause Adley to jump, letting out a small squeak. Her heart raced as she quickly walked out of her room. But something in the corner of her eye caused her to look behind her. If her heart was to beat any faster, it might come out of her chest. What was that she just saw? A shadow man?

"Adley! Your mother has called you down for supper," Adley's father called sternly.

"I'm coming!' she called, running down the hall towards the stairs.

This house was so creepy. She wondered about the history of it. Was there some type of death that happened in the house? Murder perhaps? What could be worse than those two things? A witch ritual?

As Adley made herself comfortable at the round wooden table, her mother set a glass or orange juice in front of her.

"Thanks Mom," she smiled, staring at her favorite drink intently.

Just as soon as she picked it up and was about to take a sip, she screamed, dropping the glass on the hard wood floor making it shatter.

"Adley!" her mother yelled at her. "What's gotten into you?"

"Th..the drink... it was," Adley stuttered, pointing to the orange juice that was now all over the floor. "It was blood..."

Her father shook his head and handed his wife a towel. "Your imagination needs to chill, young lady. We can't afford to keep buying glasses every time you think something is in them."

"But I swear, Dad. It was bloody!" she argued.

"That's enough! Let's enjoy our meal and head off to bed. Clearly someone needs to sleep," her mother retorted, giving Adley a stern look.

Adley sat there quietly, eating her meal without another word. Was she going crazy? Or where her parents right? Maybe her mind was tired. That's why she's seeing things. Right, that had to be it.

After she finished eating and listening to her parents go on about work and why not going to the prom was good for her, Adley made her way to the big full bath next to her room and started getting ready for a nice warm shower. That's what she needed after all the excitement she just had. But she still couldn't shake that eerie feeling she was having ever since they had arrived to the hill top fall house.

As soon as she turned on the water, she looked in the mirror and sighed. Her mind was tired, she would keep telling herself. She just needed rest. Just as soon as she was about to look away from the mirror, a figure in the corner caught her eye. Adley never took her eyes off of it as she watched it intently. It never moved, she never moved. Only its dark figure like body and red eyes remained visible. If she blinked, maybe it would move closer to her. She didn't want this. She didn't want it to know she was frightened. So she spoke.

"Who are you and why are you bothering me?" she said, fear clearly in her voice.

It growled. A deep and evil growl. She closed her eyes and once she opened them, it was gone. She quickly finished up her bath and jumped into bed. This was going to be a long restless night.
