I remember the time I got attacked by a ghost during a ghost hunt.

Okay, so, it wasn't really an attack.

Three friends and I decided to go on a ghost hunt using a terrible camera. We got the camera, went into our allegedly-haunted school building, and then I got spooked by a fan that was blowing a curtain on one of the rooms.

I, being an idiot, freaked out and charged into the stairwell, where I knocked myself out. The police came, woke me up, and yelled at me. I was them promptly escorted out of the building, being given a stern talking-to by police the whole time out.

Truth be told, the ghost hunting experience probably should have been done with someone who knew what they were doing, rather than a bunch of idiots. After that bizarre attempt at cavorting with the paranormal, I decided to keep my ghost hunting to a minimum.

Though it wasn't for me back then, I eventually joined a ghost hunting group and learned the ropes. To do it, you actually need to have ghost hunting equipment that will give you documented proof and help you figure out where to look.

Speaking as someone who's gone on a number of hunts, there are certain devices you really need to have if you want to do things right.

According to studies performed by paranormal researchers, ghostly activity tends to come along with spikes in Electro Magnetic Frequencies—or EMF pulses. Actually, high EMF ratings are commonly associated with just about every type of ghostly occurrence.

Having an EMF sensor like the one from Alternative Tech International will help you determine what areas you should investigate, and also figure out whether you have a ghost nearby.

Some ghost hunters actually use EMF sensors to interact with ghosts. They ask spirits to "spike" the sensor as a way to say "yes" or "no," then wait to see what happens. No matter how you use it, it's safe to say that this is pretty priceless ghost hunting equipment.

Without a doubt, one of the most common tools ghost hunters use is a digital voice recorder. Digital voice recorders are excellent for capturing electronic voice phenomena, or EVPs, while you're exploring creepy buildings.

A sensitive recorder, such as this digital voice recorder from Sony, will be able to pick up disembodied whispers your ears may have missed. Even if you're on a budget, this affordable gadget is a must-have.

Back in the day, you would have had to hire a medium to potentially speak to the dead. Modern technology and the best ghost hunting and paranormal equipment on Amazon has offered up a new way to hear what spirits have to say in the form of a radio sweep box.

The way that this works is pretty simple. The radio sweep picks up radio frequencies from the nearby area, which in turn allegedly churns up enough energy for ghosts to use to communicate.

This is often used in conjunction with a voice recorder acquiring EVPs as a way to magnify the EVPs you can get. So far, it seems like this ghost hunting equipment can be a huge help to people who want to hear disembodied voices.

The Ovilus is a relatively new piece of ghost hunting equipment, but it's one that really deserves some accolades. This equipment works by letting ghosts "speak" by converting environmental changes into words.

Think about how ghosts would have to work, and you'll understand why it makes sense. Since ghosts can't really talk like people do, their best bet is to change the environment to get noticed.

If you've ever watched Ghost Hunters or Destination Truth, you might have seen a show presenter use an Ovilus for ghost hunting purposes. Admittedly, it's pricey, but from what we've seen on shows, it seems to work pretty well.

Another important tool in a ghost hunter's arsenal is a camera—and not the one on your cellphone, either. Having a high quality digital camera is a good way to help ensure that the shots you get will be crisp enough to avoid doubt.

This camera is a good choice for people who want a sturdy device that's easy to charge, stores plenty of shots, and also takes camera pictures that stay in a minimum of 720 pixels.

This one might take you by surprise. After all, ghosts like to lurk in dark spaces, right? Yes, they do. However, if you trip over a chair or knock yourself out on a stairwell, your ghost hunting session is pretty much over.

A lot of the places paranormal researchers go aren't exactly safe. They may be abandoned buildings, empty hospitals, or even just a place where hoarders may have too much clutter to know what to do with. Either way, it's a good idea to be able to look where you're going.

You need a source of light when you go out ghost hunting, even if it's only for safety's sake. Paranormal investigators are of no use to anyone if they do nothing but fall down the stairs and cry for help.

If you pay attention to paranormal researchers, then you already know that one of the most common signs of a haunting is the presence of cold spots. These areas are thought to be cold due to spirits taking heat and using heat's energy as a way to manifest themselves.

Thermal imaging systems are designed to help ghost hunters find out what areas are cold; and more importantly, if they're moving and human-shaped. If they are, you might have found a ghost!

Many of the most successful investigations are ones that take place over several days—or even weeks. Of course, this isn't compatible with having a regular day job. Moreover, you can't even be there in many cases.

The best solution for ghost hunters that have long-term investigations is to buy some security cameras that can act as eyes when they aren't there. This set comes with three night vision-ready cameras that can be controlled via an app.

Should you see a ghost while you're away, these cameras can act on your behalf. What's better than that?

Not all ghost hunters believe in ouija boards, nor do those who believe in them want to touch them. As you might already know, ouija boards are used to channel the dead and have a conversation with them.

That being said, they have a lot of controversy with them. People have claimed to get in touch with beings that weren't ghosts through them, and at times, this has caused serious problems to erupt.

If you're willing to risk it, then this can definitely be used for ghost hunting on a budget. Be warned though, it's some seriously risky equipment to wield if you believe in it.

Finally, another good choice for ghost hunting equipment is night vision goggles. The reason why this tech is a great gift idea for ghost lovers is simple: Ghosts love the dark, and being able to see minor details that would be otherwise invisible might make or break your investigation.

A pair of night vision goggles can help you discern shadow people when regular vision won't. Better still? They can help you avoid tripping over things you otherwise wouldn't see on the ground.
