Real Unexplained Supernatural Events in Chinese Folklore: Part Thirteen
This is a true story that happened in a suburban inn. One of my friends had a business trip to a remote town where there was a small inn, a three-story building painted white. Each floor had six independent guest rooms, and the bathrooms were located on the right side of the corridor. My friend's room was on the second floor, the second one from the left. It was four rooms away from the bathroom on the right side of the corridor. On the way to the room, my friend noticed that the entire second floor seemed silent. It seemed like he was the only one staying there that night. However, my friend, not easily frightened, didn't think too much of it.
Chinese Folklore: Unexplained Supernatural Events Part Eleven
In our region, there is a belief that when a person's soul is asleep, one part of their soul can easily wander. This belief is often associated with experiences of sleep paralysis or ghostly encounters during sleep. Some individuals frequently claim to dream about deceased loved ones or strange, eerie places resembling the afterlife, such as the underworld. It is explained as an imbalance of Yin energy and low luck. For instance, my mother often dreams of deceased individuals, experiences peculiar dreams, and sometimes dreams of places resembling the underworld. People with such experiences often have disordered homes, and their souls are believed to be restlessly wandering, leading to poor mental health and disrupted sleep patterns.

The grandmother told a story: She said there were two people working in the fields together. During noon, one of them fell asleep, and the person who stayed awake saw a small figure emerging from the head of the sleeping person. It walked along a small piece of grass towards a small puddle of water. The awake person was curious, so they took away the small piece of grass. They noticed that the person who was sleeping had broken into a sweat and their face had changed color. Feeling afraid, the awake person quickly put the grass back, and the small figure walked back along the grass and returned to the sleeping person. When the sleeping person woke up, they were asked about their dream. They said they had crossed a large bridge but when they tried to return, the bridge had disappeared, and they were almost in a panic.

So, he would visit home every weekend. One summer night, late in the evening, he was riding his bicycle back home from a neighboring village where he had some work. After the Chinese New Year in 2002, my grandfather, who had been in poor health, began to request candles. At first, no one paid much attention to it, as my grandfather lived in a retirement home in the city, and they had their own power supply. However, my grandfather's request for candles continued for a week, and eventually, my aunt had to search for a pack of candles on the balcony to fulfill his request. By this time, my grandfather's eyesight was failing, and he held onto the candles tightly, saying, "Not enough, not enough, we need more for the Lantern Festival."

In the past, not all farmers owned land. To feed themselves, they had to work as laborers on the land of wealthy landowners, a tough and grueling job often referred to as "kanghuo." This was a difficult life, with no days off, and it usually took a whole year's work to earn some grain for their own families. At the end of the year, landowners would host a good meal for their laborers, paying them their annual wages or grain. The laborers would then return home for the New Year festivities and come back to work in the fields in the spring.

"I see you! I know you killed my father! I saw you the day you took his heart. I saw you when you threw white stones at him! I know you're there! I can see you. I can see the white stones in your hands!" Onyeka's voice reverberated through the room as he shouted at the ghost outside the window. Nneoma, his mother, and his siblings watched in astonishment as Onyeka confronted an invisible presence, one that only he could perceive. "Onyiy, who are you talking to? There's no one at the window!" Nneka exclaimed. "No, there is someone there! The ghost who killed Papa is standing there! He's been coming around our house for a week now!" Onyeka insisted. "Stop! Onyeka, stop! Please, I beg you, stop talking about ghosts!" Nneoma pleaded urgently.
