The Cavern
Falling down deep into the cavern below, my expeditions climbing expert hoists me up. “You scared me for a minute.” Lilly pipes up trying to ease the heart-pounding death that almost occurred.

Dani drove along the deserted road. At four in the morning there was never much traffic. Lately it was one of the things that Dani liked about opening the gas station every morning. It gave her time to think. This morning was her first day back at work in almost a week. The last few days had been dark and bleak, leaving her gasping for air as she tried to find a reason to keep going, a reason to live. Dani felt lost. Her world came crashing down like shattered glass around her feet when her mother died suddenly. Tears welled in her eyes, blurring her vision, as she remembered their last conversation.

We've all have heard stories about vampires and creatures going bump in the night, but where do most of these tales originate from? Demonology is the study of multiple creatures of the abyss from all origins of the world. Within the studies of demonology are vampiric creatures ranging from firefly-transforming bloodsuckers all the way to a corpse crawling its way from the grave to feast on your flesh.

I chewed slowly before swallowing the abhorrent soul. It was only partially black, but still tasted a lot on the puke side. I took in a deep breath and exhaled. I always thought this would be the fun part, but sometimes the taste made me almost reconsider. Suddenly, as I raised my hand for my people to send in the next one, I felt a weight on my head. I let my hand drop and looked up to see the stubby little ends of baby fingers at the edge of my eyebrows. A smile spread across my face and I shook my head a little. The fingers retracted, gripping my scalp and I heard a soft giggle.

Walking through the woods looking around. Making sure nothing is following. I can't help but think about the creature. Still wondering where it came from. Why was the map blacked out? Why the fences? Why the secrecy? Questions I should have just left alone.

Blood. There’s blood everywhere. The maroon liquid fills the damp air with its strong, metallic odor, thick and sloshy as you gingerly step through it with your soaked shoes and dripping pants that rest against your torn flesh in tatters.
After Dark
My head. I had a splitting headache as I woke up to thickly pebbled dirt stuck to the side of my face. I barely took a breath when I inhaled dust, coughing immediately. I took note of my body, feeling the breeze sweep over my back as I turned my head from side to side. Nothing broken, so far. I braced my hands against the dirt, lifting myself slowly to my knees. Everything else seemed intact. Nothing missing, nothing fractured.

Note: The title of this essay is inspired by the title of a story in the anthology 'Lonely Vigils' by Manly Wade Wellman. It might be wise to begin with a few prefatory remarks about such legends as that of King Lycaon, who served Zeus the flesh of his son Nyctimus to see if Zeus was, indeed, all-knowing. Zeus, enraged by this, transformed Lycaon into a "man wolf." Nyctimus was restored to life. Also, there are the tales of the Norse "Ber-serkir," or "Bear-shirts," a class of warrior said to fight in a trance-like state, approximating possession by an animal, often a wolf, after donning the animal's pelt. The images of such Germanic "wolf warriors" is represented on many ancient shields and carvings.
Movie Review: 'Dead House' (2014)
Scrolling through Hulu's horror movies, I stumbled upon Dead House (2014), a film directed by Brini Amerigo and produced by Marco Palese. I judged a movie by its cover and assumed that people were going to be trapped in a house full of flesh-eating, bloodthirsty zombies. That was 20 percent of the case, in my opinion.
Sabri'A PricePublished 5 years ago in HorrorScary Tales Publishing's 'Monster Mash-Ups' Is Pure Creature Feature Nostalgia
The age of black and white creature features is dead. At least that’s what the CGI-laden blockbusters of today would have you believe. As moviegoers, we do get the rare treat of a purely practical monstrosity, but to see them come to life on the big screen is a rarity. What if the silver screen wasn’t our only outlet to relive the golden age of monster cinema?

Sitting on the park bench, Ava Smalls thought quietly about what to do. Her deceased father haunted her thoughts, telling her it was all her fault. She got up quietly and slowly and walked to the abandoned swings. Calling out to her father in her mind, she sat on the swings, waiting for him to appear. She closed her eyes, hoping he would show up. “Ava.” A voice whispered in her ear, close enough to her to make her eyes pop open.
