After Dark
My head. I had a splitting headache as I woke up to thickly pebbled dirt stuck to the side of my face. I barely took a breath when I inhaled dust, coughing immediately. I took note of my body, feeling the breeze sweep over my back as I turned my head from side to side. Nothing broken, so far. I braced my hands against the dirt, lifting myself slowly to my knees. Everything else seemed intact. Nothing missing, nothing fractured.

Note: The title of this essay is inspired by the title of a story in the anthology 'Lonely Vigils' by Manly Wade Wellman. It might be wise to begin with a few prefatory remarks about such legends as that of King Lycaon, who served Zeus the flesh of his son Nyctimus to see if Zeus was, indeed, all-knowing. Zeus, enraged by this, transformed Lycaon into a "man wolf." Nyctimus was restored to life. Also, there are the tales of the Norse "Ber-serkir," or "Bear-shirts," a class of warrior said to fight in a trance-like state, approximating possession by an animal, often a wolf, after donning the animal's pelt. The images of such Germanic "wolf warriors" is represented on many ancient shields and carvings.
Movie Review: 'Dead House' (2014)
Scrolling through Hulu's horror movies, I stumbled upon Dead House (2014), a film directed by Brini Amerigo and produced by Marco Palese. I judged a movie by its cover and assumed that people were going to be trapped in a house full of flesh-eating, bloodthirsty zombies. That was 20 percent of the case, in my opinion.

The age of black and white creature features is dead. At least that’s what the CGI-laden blockbusters of today would have you believe. As moviegoers, we do get the rare treat of a purely practical monstrosity, but to see them come to life on the big screen is a rarity. What if the silver screen wasn’t our only outlet to relive the golden age of monster cinema?

Sitting on the park bench, Ava Smalls thought quietly about what to do. Her deceased father haunted her thoughts, telling her it was all her fault. She got up quietly and slowly and walked to the abandoned swings. Calling out to her father in her mind, she sat on the swings, waiting for him to appear. She closed her eyes, hoping he would show up. “Ava.” A voice whispered in her ear, close enough to her to make her eyes pop open.

A buzzing noise interrupts my endless dreaming and I slowing fade into consciousness. I slip out of my covers and cold feet follow the noise to discover the mysterious source. Outside my room the light creates a eerie glow and blends the room together, flowing from orange to black. I struggle to maneuver my way through the blurry picture avoiding the dark shapes that try to trip me. The buzzing has lowered to the bass of a drum and it lingers on the other side of the front door.

I don't know how long ago I had this dream, but I can still remember a great deal of it so vividly. I was a male in the army, in a movie. The team and I had been assigned to fight something and we had ended up in some sort of tunnel. I can't remember what the commander of the operation told us, we just did as we were told. So we entered the tunnel and the deeper we got, the tunnel that had led underground seemed to turn into a hallway, then a large building. Inside, the building was built like a maze and the lights were flashing. It was so blinding I needed to squint to even remotely see. We carried on with the operation but began to hear the oddest sounds. The place had some sort of seaweed like plants hanging down from the ceiling and something like chicken wire ripped to shreds and just plastered to the sides of the maze so every once in a while one of us would walk into the metal or into the weird plants. We didn't get harmed by anything hanging from the ceiling but the sounds from something we assumed was a dying animal continued to increase. Then the sounds multiplied. We knew it wasn't a dying animal and I know at least I felt a feeling of dread and something else I couldn't describe even now. I just knew I wanted to run out of this maze-like place and get out. So I started running, leading my pack anywhere that seemed like it would lead to an exit. A few times we came to a dead end and had to backtrack. Some of us were killed. I think I was one of them. I had been very close to this square-like exit.

Jikininki This Japanese creature resembles a human, but it is not any ordinary human, as it devours the souls, or ghosts, of those who have passed. Buddhists believe that these creatures are evil spirits of greedy people who eat corpses at night for eternity. The Jikininki has sharp claws and creepy, glowing eyes.
