fiction
Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
All in a Day’s Work
1961 Every day in Miriam Ford’s life is the same. Or at least it has been since she married Hank at the tender age nineteen. Sure, they’ve added a couple babies since then, which livened things for a bit. First came Jimmy, then Ethel three years later. Still, each day is the same.

The Crossroads Inn
It was as if the sky had gotten out of a relationship that it thought would last forever because this rain seemed to never end. Cries of thunder shook the ground around me as I walked quickly through this concrete jungle. Small rivers of water raced through the streets looking for a way into the sewer system. People ran to get to shelter, and cars whisked through these new rivers as if they were nothing. I walked, looking for a place that I could call my own for the remainder of this storm, and perhaps grab a drink.

"Lucky"
When Brian the bartender re-entered the Lucky Penny night club he removed his wet hat and coat. A young woman approached him and Brian placed both of the clothing items over her thin extended arms. She nearly collapsed from their weight with a grunt. Brian was not an eight to nine foot giant as one would periodically see around Dice City, but he was a menacing and broad seven foot five. Anytime he would meet a giant around the city they would call him tiny. In his youth that irritated him into fighting as often as possible even with the giants. As a result he learned to fight far too well early on. Anyone else would be dead by now except that Brian also learned to back off from violence until it was necessary. It was this educated reserve that brought him to the attention of the Head Chef. The current owner of The Lucky Penny night club.

Vine house
7:38am “BETHANY!? Where the fuck is my white blouse?” It’s Saturday morning… Distant shrills of my roommates voice start to fill the house. I’ve slept with my mouth open. My eyes are half glued together from last night’s make up. I try to start moistening my mouth. No use. I peel open my eyes and… Oh God instant headache. Reaching for my life and saviour, I grab my glass of water and start chugging.

Too bad for Humanity
They were standing in the staff room of their laboratory, just the two of them. The troubles of the world showed on the TV monitor: angry people, war, famine, megalomaniacs. But he had to turn it off. She was telling him something. It was a shock. Had they wasted their time? All that research? All those hours? The profound results they had paid for with their nervous systems?

No Place For Children
Highbridge House loomed above me, and all my doubts about returning flooded me with fear. I had hated the house on first sight. I told Mum and Dad that it was a stupid place to bring Becca. It wasn’t a good idea to put such a headstrong and rambunctious little girl in a place that was so obviously full of dangerous temptations.

FLY
"Now what?" Amanda asked. The two travellers stretched their legs outside the car from the three hour trip. It hadn't snowed in Charity like it had in Covet, but the town was just as cold. There was a chill in the air that the afternoon sun couldn't eliminate. And the breeze helped little. It ripped through Vinnit's woolen trenchcoat, making it feel twenty degrees colder than it actually was.

Dream 1
Dream 1 Oscar once read that we all dream in black and white. If you asked, and I have, the name of the book, he couldn’t tell you with anything resembling certainty or accuracy. Something something dreams and stuff, the science of understanding your brain’s hot nonsense, you know, a real academic tome. He had even less recollection of the author. He was relatively certain it was written by some guy, unless you asked him on a weekend, when he became very nearly positive it was the handiwork of that one lady. You know the one. And I, no reasonable human beings accurate description of a modern skeptic, stood arms crossed, on the precipice of Oscar’s unfounded faith, his absolute confidence in a half-remembered book, about to rip it open, but not apart.

First Impressions
The first thing I noticed before I opened my eyes was the darkness. It clung to me like a damp, musty cloak left hiding in the closet of a creepy yellow house at the end of a forgotten oak-lined dirt road somewhere in South Georgia. She was nothing like the drab traditional tabby structures that stood across the marsh. A turn of the century Victorian relic, she must have loomed spectacular in her golden years with beautiful bay windows and ornamental columns supporting intricate arches with delicate lace-like detailing draping down from her third-story gables. A lush garden in the front yard with sweet red roses and a babbling fountain once surrounded by fan palms and an iron gate now grew thick with thorny weeds, and her bright yellow facade faded in the sunlight to reveal the decay of a hundred years. The smell of her old rotten wood pierced my nose, and a staleness filled my lungs with each breath I took. I lay quietly in a pine box beneath her shadow, inhaling and exhaling the past, wondering if I would ever escape.

Goes Down Smooth
"He's been wanting to go on a date with you for so long," Rebecca coos. She sits across from me at a cafe, dissecting her omelet with her fork and taking tiny nibbles of her sourdough bread. I wrap my long fingers around a cream coffee mug, as I don't have the appetite today. I pull out a cigarette from my bag and light it with a cheesy "best friends" lighter that Savvy and I got on a trip to Costa Rica. She was really happy then.

Imagine That
Everyone's eyes were impatiently watching the last few seconds tick down on the clock. In just a few more moments, the final bell would ring and summer break would officially begin. Sam was more excited than she had been in a long time. As soon as the bell rang, she and her friends would be off to their secret spot on Brighton Lake. This would be their last summer together before starting middle school. Their last adventure before everything was sure to change. Most friendships never lasted once they left elementary school. Middle school would be the start of separate classes and cliques. Sam wasn't ready for that.

My Horror Novelist Crisis
From a young age, I had a keen interest in scary stories. I devoured books like Bunnicula, The Hounds of Baskervilles, and Frankenstein. I read the entire collection of Hans Christian Andersen and The Brothers Grimm. That curiosity never left me, as I digested every Stephen King book and dived into Shirley Jacksons' unsettling creations. Recently I came to terms with what my dream is, to write horror novels.
