HAIL MERRY
THE CABIN IN the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burning in the window made Matt’s head swim. Either it was there, or it wasn’t. At the moment, he really wasn’t quite sure. He’d been seeing strange things here lately because of Clementine’s death. To him, all the world seemed a blur. The confusion was inside him. What was up might be down, and what was down just might be up. So that, this ghostly light in the far distance might not really be there at all. And not being sure just exactly what it was, Matt paused, one foot raised in mid-step. He was walking at the time over dry twigs and pine needles, walking as focused and as carefully as he possibly could, aiming not to make any sound, and became slightly disoriented by the mysterious light. It broke his concentration.

The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Its flame swayed and flickered with a slow, measured rhythm like the weary chopping of dead wood in preparation for the indifferent cold of winter. The wind was a plaintive and hollow moan that passed through the southern oak trees and caused the shingles of the cabin roof to dance and clack, saying “over here.”

Cabin 810
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The teardrop shaped, small glowing flame danced to a rhythm of its own, as if a steady flow of wind claimed the surrounding space. Anything beyond the window was dark and uninviting, but I would be lying if I say it hadn’t piqued my interest. I laid awake snuggled beneath the covers, warm and content but unable to settle.

The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Kevin was startled awake by the shimmering glow of the candle as he opened his eyes, his vision hazy, adjusting to the light. He'd never been drunk before, but he imagined this was what it would feel like. He had the vague feeling of being misplaced, waking up without knowing where he was.

That Phantom Touch
It should never be a sunny day when you're holding a funeral. Yet here they were, barely a cloud in the sky and the sticky heat of early autumn in Savannah. Not the weather to be wearing black, yet there she stood as the coffin descended.

Natal
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. I can’t say with any certainty whether my late night foray up the porch stairs and through the long doorless entrance was a matter of mere curiosity or perhaps an ugly and well-hidden desire that I, too, might be swallowed up by the house like so many others had allegedly been. I wasn’t even entirely sure that the light in the window was anything more than an oddity at first, something curious yet entirely mundane like late season fireflies or a clinging patch of bioluminescent fungus.
